Preface
The way we live and love is very different today than it was ten years ago, let alone fifty years ago. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the most traditional rite of passage-the wedding celebration. The ritual itself has not changed, nor has all of the excitement and anticipation that surrounds it. But what has changed are the participants. Couples are much less likely to meet in their neighborhood, place of worship, or even their hometown. Today, young adults travel to pursue an education or career opportunities. In so doing, they are likely to meet and fall in love with someone who is intellectually, academically, and emotionally compatible, but with whom they have little else in common-someone who comes from a very different religious, cultural, or socioeconomic background and whose family may not even speak the same language.
An event as traditional as a wedding is universally associated with fairly rigid guidelines and expectations based on what has always been done in your family or among your friends. That was fine when the two people marrying each other had common roots. Now, the differences are more the rule than the exception, and these are the challenges couples face as they plan their wedding today. This book focuses on helping you identify your similarities and your differences; then it provides you with constructive ways to plan a deeply meaningful celebration that forms the foundation for a wonderfully happy life together.
In researching this book, we bring advice from couples who have successfully overcome the disparities in their backgrounds, and from clergy and wedding consultants who have helped couples to see how the factors unique to the couple s respective backgrounds can enhance their wedding and their lives. We also bring our combined experience of forty-five years in the wedding planning field: I, with Modern Bride for thirty-one years, and Stephanie as a feature writer in the magazine for fourteen years. Additionally, our personal lives reflect today s trends. Thirty-three years ago I became engaged to an Italian Catholic whose immigrant parents arrived in this country just five months before his birth. I was from a Jewish family settled here for four generations. Our intellects, our educations, our cultural interests, and our souls were totally compatible, but our family backgrounds could not have been more different. We bridged the gap with sensitivity, love, and reasonable compromise, and our life together is more fulfilling as the years go by.
Stephanie, a Roman Catholic Texas Democrat, fell in love with a Methodist New Yorker who votes Republican. They came from different directions, but somehow they arrived at the same place. Their long-term, long-distance courtship and their twenty-seven year marriage is yet another testimony to accentuating the positive and eliminating the disparities. Now, neither can imagine being married to anyone else.
While we were a bit ahead of the times, young adults these days are used to diversity among their peers and often seek out these characteristics in choosing a lifetime partner. Parents, however, are often not so adaptable and feel threatened at the prospect of the merger of their daughter or son with someone whose traditions are so different from their own. Therefore, the primary concern for many engaged couples is, How do we make our families understand that we truly are well matched and that, rather than undermining our family ties, our marriage can strengthen them?
The answers to this and all the other questions involved in wedding planning are in this book. It is a reference/workbook intended to provide you with everything you need to know to plan the wedding, and the marriage, of your dreams.
