Foreword
You never forget your first love, and since you’re perusing this quiz book, it seems quite possible that, like me, your first love was music. As John Miles wrote and sang in 1976 “Music was my first love and it will be my last”, I think he was right. Music has the ability to move us emotionally, and in so doing it burns deeply into hearts, minds and memories.
You remember where you were when you first heard a certain song; you remember the first record you bought; the first gig you went to; the first pop star you met; every single line of every song on the albums you listened to over and over again between the ages of 14 and 25, when music was simply the most important thing in our lives. This information is burned deep. In some ways it becomes part of the very essence of who you are, yes, it’s that important, well, to you it is. Brian Eno describes culture as “That which you *choose* to do”, and so in my opinion the music you choose to listen to simply defines your culture.
Whether you grew up as a fan of pop, jazz, country, disco, funk, R&B, rap & hip hop, rock ‘n roll, punk rock, heavy metal or classical you will be an expert in your field of music, because that relationship is established at a tender age when your grey matter is supple and absorbent and the bulk of your time is spent learning new stuff (mostly because you are young and so EVERYTHING is new).
I recall a period in my life when I could name all of Slade’s single and album releases in order, I could recite the album’s track listings, name the B-sides of all the singles, I knew the song writing credits, the location and date of recording, the names of any guest musicians on individual tracks or indeed any information I could glean from the record sleeve, or in my own particular case the cassette sleeve. The simple truth is that most of that stuff is still there in my head, decades later, and when tested I’m confident I can dig deep and recall the vast majority of it even now.
For me the time I spent absorbing all that stuff came in useful in my career as a TV presenter when I was known as Gaz Top and required to do interviews with musicians or introduce artists. Like you though it is the simple sense of sheer satisfaction I get when still dredging the depths of my mind to answer a puzzling music query that comes up in conversation that is the true reward. It’s clear that as a music-hungry teen I’d used my time wisely. And so have you. Every piece of music trivia that you absorbed over the years is now going to be put to good use with this marvellous quiz book.
You think you know your music? It’s time to find out.
Enjoy the challenge!
Gareth Jones
