Foreword

I must say I was delighted to be asked to provide the foreword for this England quiz book and it is a real pleasure to accept.
I was born in 1966, a year every fan will remember as England winning the World Cup trophy at Wembley against West Germany, 4-2. I always wanted to play for my country as I thought it would be great to represent England at the highest level.
I first made my England debut in February 1987 against Spain in a 4-2 win – what a fantastic experience it is to play for your country and I was only 20-years-old. Well, 66 caps in total and my final appearance for England was in 2000, against Germany, a 1-0 defeat (the last ever match to be played at Wembley Stadium). I was also fortunate to captain my country during Euro ‘96, which is one of the best experiences of my football career. What a lot of people don’t know is I was the last England player to score at Wembley Stadium, in a 2-0 victory against Ukraine.
I have been so lucky to play in the same team as some world-class players for Arsenal and England as well as some great managers; Bobby Robson, Gary Lineker, David Platt, Alan Shearer, Paul Gascoinge to name a few – I have also played against the best players in the world during World Cup and European Championship matches.
When I read through this book I was amazed at all the facts and figures on the England football team, it brought back some great memories from some fantastic matches and players who have worn the three lions on their shirt. This book will test your knowledge to see how big a fan you are and see how much you remember from the past years; the 1,000 questions cover everything from players to World Cup tournaments.

Introduction

As football fans, we are all partisan about our own clubs. Most of us have rival fans that we are either jealous of or just detest because they hate us. There is but one thing that will unite the common supporter - the national team. For, no matter what colours we may wear on a Saturday, most of us sport an England shirt or a St George flag when England are playing in a tournament somewhere. Manchester United may be right to claim that they are the most supported team in the world, but the most supported team in this country is England.
I have, of course, seen my own club play live hundreds of times but have only had the opportunity to see England play once. I am quite lucky, as most England fans have only ever seen them play on television.
While researching this book I found that my earliest memory of the national team was on 16 April 1975 when England played Cyprus in a European Championship qualifier at Wembley. That game had a particular significance for a certain Newcastle United striker, but I don’t want to answer one of the questions that you will face later. It was also one of the last games in an England shirt for World Cup winner Alan Ball, whom I would later see play many times at The Dell for Southampton.
I was born a few weeks before England won the World Cup and I envy those people who can remember watching and celebrating that victory. Every two years we fans are given hope only to find that fortune never seems to be on our side - perhaps a long-term curse for the huge piece of luck that a certain Russian linesman bestowed on us in 1966. A famous England anthem rang out, ‘thirty years of hurt’, in 1996. A more fitting lyric now would probably now be ‘forty years of frustration’.
However, England have the longest international history in the world, along with their original (and less successful) opponents, and, as you will find out in this book, there have been hundreds of memorable things to recall about our footballing heritage.
So read on, and I hope that this book will challenge you, interest you and educate you on our England team.
