About The Authors
Joachim ( Jack ) Volhard is an internationally known dog obedience instructor. Since 1972 he has given obedience clinics all over America, Canada and England. He has authored numerous articles for various dog publications, including Pure-bred Dogs, The American Kennel Gazette, and he is the recipient of four awards from the Dog Writers Association of America. His film Puppy Aptitude Testing was named Best Film on Dogs for 1980 by the DWAA.
In 1970 Jack met the late Olive S. Point of Richmond, Virginia. During their ten-year association they developed and perfected their instructional approach to training.
Jack and his wife, Wendy, breed, train and exhibit Landseer Newfoundlands. Jack has owned and trained many breeds including a Welsh Terrier, a German Shepherd Dog, a Collie, an English Springer Spaniel, a Yorkshire Terrier and a mixed breed.
Dog training is a hobby with Jack which he combines with a busy schedule as an Administrative Law Judge for the Department of Health and Human Services.
GAIL TAMASES FISHER has been training dogs professionally and teaching dog obedience classes for 12 years. In addition to running her own classes, Gail developed and instructed a 2-year college program teaching others to be obedience class instructors. She also taught a college course for dog breeders.
Gail has written many articles for dog publications including Off-Lead , the obedience training magazine, and Pure-bred Dogs-American Kennel Gazette, the American Kennel Club s official publication. She has conducted weekly pet columns in The Manchester (N.H.) Union Leader and The Goffstown News. She has also given many lectures and seminars on dog behavior, training and instructing, both in America and abroad.
Gail and her husband, Howard, raise Mastiffs and Vizslas which they train and show in both conformation and obedience.

Foreword
What makes this book so good? There are three major reasons. (1) Training methods are based on well-established psychological principles and are adapted to the mind of the dog. (2) Procedures are described in clear detail, with explicit criteria for going on to the next step of the training program. (3) Information is provided on how to select a dog to fit one s life style, and the importance of beginning training at the proper age. Other good features are recommendations for housing and feeding, and for the selection of equipment.
Common problems of dog behavior are illustrated by entertaining accounts of the misadventures of Konrad and other dogs. These should be useful to owners who often do not realize that their efforts to eliminate undesirable behavior actually reinforce it. Practical advice on even one behavioral problem could be worth the cost of the book.
