THE SAINT BERNARD
PUBLISHER S NOTE
PUBLISHERS are engaged in a fascinating business. In fact, the publishing of books is both a business and an art. A book should be a thing of beauty in its design, its illustrations, its typography, and in the quality and nature of the paper used.

CARE OF A BOOK
TO THE true lover of books, every book has a soul. Gratitude would demand willing care from the reader. In return for the many constant delights of mental companionship a book gives, the reader should handle it with tender touch.
Turned-up corners of leaves are a crime of callous heart. To turn the edge of a leaf for marking where the reader left off, is like bending one s nose upside down to mark the spot on the face. Close the book rather than lay it downward on its face, even tho you will be away only for an instant.
Throwing a book is as proper as striking your friends with a club. Keep its covers as free from spots as you want your face free from warts. To tear out pages is as to gouge out another s eye. Avoid the sunlight, the dust and dampness, for these wreck the very body of a book.
As you treat your friends, so treat your books, for a time will come in life when you will regard your books among your most-liked friends.

HOW TO OPEN A BOOK
NOT LONG ago I purchased at no little cost a volume which was done after the best fashion of the book maker s art so that it was a delight to the eye, a temptation to the hand.
Indeed it proved to be too great temptation, for when I showed it to a friend of mine a few days later, he thotlessly of course, and by force of habit, took it eagerly in his hands, held it tightly, and opening the pages at random, quickly did what most persons do on like occasions - ruined the binding of the book.
Any new book, however cheap its plan of make-up may be, is entitled to careful treatment of its body and backbone. Only a moment s labor is demanded to start it on its career properly.
First, place the book on a hard, even surface. Open the covers flat, holding all the pages stiffly upright with one hand. Then with the other, let down a few pages on one side, then a few on the other, each time moving the finger along the binding, until all pages have been gently adjusted to the tightly sewed back.
This method loosens but does not injure the binding, enables the book to retain its shape for a long time, and is an act of kindness every lover of books will render feelingly.

INTRODUCTION
THE popularity of the Saint Bernard is due to his own winning personality. Thruout the years, this noble breed of dog has been immortalized in romance and song. Any one who has been associated with this breed, has grown to love him and has been forced to sing his praises. The author inherited his love of the breed from his father. Consequently, it is but natural for him to try and place the glorious history of this noble breed of dog before mankind.
Much of the early history was obtained by translating from original Swiss sources. The rest has been compiled over a period of years as the author and his father gathered it. Some help was given him by his brother, George H. Fleischli, M. D., Franz K. Fleischli and Clarence A. Fleischli, who are associates with him in the management of the Edelweiss Kennels.
It has been said that civilization s contribution to life has been the fashioning of many bright facets. Those who find life in its finest expression are the fortunate ones with the gift of correlating all the facets of one fulsome existence. So it is in our association with dogs. We must see the similarity in the essentials that underlie many dissimilar things. Indeed, this is the philosophy that has guided the author in breeding Saint Bernard dogs.
It is with this thought that the author presents this book to his readers.

PRINTER S POINTERS
THIS IS a Judy book of the Blue Ribbon Series. It is set on the linotype in ten-point on twelve body in Granjon, twenty-four picas wide (six picas make an inch).
The binding is hardbinding of binder s cloth over binder s board. The title and backbone are stamped in ink with brass dies.
All three sides are stained to prevent soiling. End sheets are colored and of hue to match the binding. The flyleaf (page one) contains the printed bookmark of ownership, a feature distinctive only with Judy books.
The paper stock is white eighty-pound English book. One and three-fourths sheets, thirty-six by forty-eight inches, printed on both sides and cut into seven sixteen-page sections, sewed together at the back with thread, compose one book of one hundred and twelve pages.
It is to be noted that in Judy books, abbreviations are not used, no two lines are broken in succession, and all canons of craftsmanship in bookmaking are observed.
It is preferred that this and all other Judy books be purchased thru the local bookseller, but if this is not practicable direct from the publishers.

NECESSITY FOR DOG BOOKS
JUST AS it is a duty to the fancy that the dog fancier subscribe to one or more good dog magazines, so also it is his duty that he purchase books about his breed. Unless enough books can be sold to render a profit to the author and the publisher, no future dog books will be available.
Dog books are like tools-they are necessary; they furnish valuable information; they give the benefit of the judgment and experience of experts. Without them, we would be walking in the dark.
The publication of a worthy book on a breed enhances the popularity of the particular breeds, adds recruits to its fancy, and makes possible the much-desired uniformity in type and breeding by setting forth tried and correct rules and procedure along with a record of what has been accomplished in the past and what it is hoped to accomplish in the future in behalf of the breed.
The dog fancier s library should be filled with books on his own breed and with a wide selection of general books on the dog. The successful fancier in breeding, in the show ring, and elsewhere is the well-read fancier.
