Dedication
This book is dedicated to anyone who ever owned a dog and had a dream.
To my husband, Larry, whose love and support have enabled me to turn my dreams in this sport into reality. To my two wonderful daughters, Aubrey and Tara, who have always considered their mother s involvement in the sport of dogs more of an asset than a liability. To the memory of our friend, Frank Oberstar, and his unforgettable contribution to Maltese as a breeder, exhibitor and judge.
And to the Maltese breeders throughout the world, whose dedication makes the future very bright for this breed.

Larry and Vicki Abbott and Ch. Shanlyn s Rais n A Raucous.
Acknowledgments
I wish to thank the many Maltese breeders and owners in this country who have never said no when I needed something for this book. Had I not taken on this project, I might never have learned so much more about them all and their wonderful little dogs! I only wish there had been more hours in each day, as from every conversation I added to my knowledge of this breed from their experiences.
There are many beautiful pictures in this book, and I am truly grateful for those who have gone to great lengths to send me these treasured photographs depicting the wonderful personality of the Maltese breed. It is sometimes very difficult to produce a good photograph of a white dog, so my appreciation also goes to the photographers who have caught these little guys at their best! A Maltese definitely has greeting card appeal, to say the least.
Special thanks go to The American Maltese Association and its Education Committee for their permission to use a few of the illustrations from their wonderful Illustrated Guide to the Maltese Standard , Amy Fernandez, illustrator. If you would care to have the whole booklet, you can obtain one by contacting the committee at the address posted in Appendix A .
I would also like to thank all of the special owners and breeders of the Maltese that Larry and I have campaigned. Your trust and support not only enabled all of us to achieve our goals, but also brought national attention to this breed for years to come and paved the way for others that followed. Thanks to Elsie Burke (breeder and owner of Ch. Louan s Apache Starfire); Marjorie Lewis (breeder), Mariko Sukezaki and David and Sharon Newcomb (owners of Ch. Melodylane Sing s O Al-Mar Luv); Lynda Podgurski (breeder), Joseph Joly and David and Sharon Newcomb (co-owners of Ch. Shanlyn s Rais n A Raucous with me); the late Carol Frances Andersen (breeder and owner of Ch. Sand Island Small Kraft Lite); and our friend Jere Olson (who was Carol s right hand and Henry s very best friend). The experiences that we had and the knowledge that we gained while showing these dogs cannot be measured-we loved them all.
And finally, I would like to express my appreciation to my husband Larry, who, for many years, not only planned every step of each dog s career, but also traveled along with me to make sure everything went smoothly. In addition to that, while I ve been working on this book, he has taken care of the dogs, made the meals, done the laundry, and stayed up late at night with me so that I could finish on time!

Introduction
There is one book in my library that I will never part with. It has no monetary value, but stands for the beginning of a very long career in dogs. It is a worn and faded paperback, and the pages have long since yellowed-it is over 40 years old. The book is Champion Dog Prince Tom , by Jean Fritz and Tom Clute. It is the Cinderella story of a small, skinny Cocker Spaniel puppy-the runt of the litter-who ended up being one of the greatest Obedience and Field Trial Champions of his time. It made me believe that anything is possible in the sport of dogs if you set your goals high and expect to work to get there. It also made me realize what a little dog with a big heart is capable of.
While I read that book in the early years of elementary school, my belief in these things has never changed, mostly because of the dogs I have had the privilege to know and love-a great many of them being Maltese. After having owned a number of different breeds-Collies, Poodles, Miniature Schnauzers and Pekingese-I was attracted by the beauty and elegance of the Maltese. I had found the breed to set my goals with.
My success in the show ring has been exciting, to say the least. Over the years, I have bred and finished numerous Maltese Champions under the Scylla prefix. In 1985, I handled a little dog that I had bred, Best in Show Champion Scylla s Mina Maya Starfire. Starfire
