In the pages to follow, you’ll learn about your puppy as an individual. How his personality, breed characteristics, and temperament all flow together to create a spirit that once understood is easier to direct, connect with, and train.
A helpful tool at the end of this book is my Doglish Glossary. Whenever you come across terms you are unfamiliar with, check out the glossary to see the definition, and be sure to also reference the index to find out all you can on the topic. The References shouldn’t be skipped either—it’s full of valuable resources to enhance your knowledge of puppies and training.
What you won’t find within these pages are techniques that foster confusion. Rough handling and tough love frighten some puppies into submission, but they aren’t effective, and they’re just not fair.
You are sharing your life with your chosen puppy and are forever connected. Raising him well is a fabulous responsibility, and your puppy will reward you in ways immeasurable and unexpected. I am thrilled you have chosen me to help you in your journey.

Introduction
When I first met Rocket, a 7-month-old Maltese, he bounded into my office, well, like a rocket. Trailing behind him was his mom, with a look of utter exasperation. Unleashed, he leapt into my lap and kissed my nose between bounces, and then raced across the room and peed on the couch. A whirlwind of positive energy with a dash of chaotic marking rolled in for good measure.
Okay, first things first. His mom made it immediately clear: he was one step away from adoption. “He’s so willful.” “He just won’t calm down.” “He knows he’s wrong when he pees, but he just won’t stop!” “He races away from me when I call and he eats his poop!” “You are my last hope!”
My initial read on this white fireball? His sweet, adoring, bright nature shone through the mania. He was enthusiastic, eager to please, and totally confused. So why had things gotten so twisted around? Was his mom to blame?

No, Rocket’s mom was experiencing what so many puppy owners feel: emotional exhaustion and mental strain. What started out as love at first sight had snowballed into a battle of wills. She suddenly had feelings of regret and desperation that she neither anticipated nor welcomed. She knew in her heart that this “monster” was the same sweet lovable puppy she’d adopted five months ago, but where had things gone wrong? And more importantly was she too late to help?
Fortunately I was spot-on in my assessment. Ninety minutes later, they left relieved, reconnected, and relaxed. As I explained Rocket’s temperament and just how he’d become addicted to naughty behavior, his mother clearly started to understand just what it would take to reverse the trend. Here are just a handful of the things she learned that day:

• Rocket was simply repeating routines that got her attention: whether it was negative or positive attention didn’t matter. Any reaction was considered interaction.
• One of his primary drives was to stay connected to her. To interface. To dialog. He was a people puppy.
• Frustrating the situation was the vicious cycle of isolation. Rocket had to be crated or gated in the kitchen to prevent accidents and mischief. Instead of educating him through organized exposure, his owners hoped he would “grow out” of certain behaviors. What happened instead is that new behaviors emerged, such as chronic barking, which brought about (can you guess) more attention.
First and foremost, the isolation had to end. Although I understood that he was isolated because he wasn’t housetrained and raced around frantically when he escaped, the isolation was cre
