Foreword
W HEN I GRADUATED veterinary school in 1966, I had a strong background in anatomy, physiology, medicine, surgery and other ancillary subjects that I felt prepared me well to treat the medical and surgical problems of my clients’ pets. Nowhere during my preveterinary curriculum nor during my four years at the N.Y.S. College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University was I exposed to an organized course in animal behavior or psychology.
I soon realized that many of the questions I was expected to answer and much of the advice I was expected to give were related to animal behavior. The behavior of a companion animal is probably the most important factor in determining how much an owner enjoys his or her pet. A serious problem with behavior, such as aggression, fear biting, house soiling, may lead to a pet’s demise as readily as being hit by a car or developing a serious, possibly untreatable, disease condition.
Carol Benjamin’s approach to understanding and directing a dog’s behavior is based on the fundamental premise that the domesticated dog is recently descended from a pack animal. From his first lesson with his mother, to his interactions with his siblings and finally in his interaction with adults both inside and outside the pack, his behavior is modified and directed to establish his place in the pack. Only by understanding this system can a natural method of behavior modification and training be undertaken. Using this method we will not ask the pet to understand a new form of training. Rather, we will use the method (as closely as we can mimic it) that has been used for generations to help the individual find his or her place in a new pack/family.
