Acknowledgments
This work could not have been completed without the help and cooperation of the Min Pin breeders and lovers who have shared their personal stories and their treasured archival pictures. Their generosity serves to demonstrate the degree to which they are dedicated to this small, lively and loving breed. My gratitude to them is abundant.
The Miniature Pinscher Club of America has been most generous in sharing data and information, as their goal matches mine-that of bringing the Min Pin to the attention and appreciation of the public.
A special note of appreciation goes to Blake Matheson of Stetson Min Pins, whose support and ability to wring information from a dry well is without equal. Behind Blake lies the support and encouragement of his parents, who have the good sense to realize that this sport-and especially this breed-is Blake s passion. It is within such hands that the future of the Miniature Pinscher will be secure.

Introduction
I met my first Miniature Pinschers in the early 1950s. Some friends, the Wiltrakises, had outgrown their Boxers and had gotten into this smaller breed that they thought would be less active. Of course they were wrong, and they came to obedience classes where I met them. I watched in admiration as Henrietta Wiltrakis and then Sue Harvey worked with their Min Pins through obedience titles that were hard fought and won! Above all else, I was introduced to the charm and amusement of the breed.
I imagine I first came to the attention of Min Pin breeders when I placed a Min Pin, Ch. Sunbrook Buckskin Gal, second in the Toy Group at the Westminster show in New York. That was in 1990, and the breed and I have been buddies ever since. That same year Buckskin Gal was Best of Breed at the National Specialty.
As a judge I have always been very particular about the kind of Min Pin I prefer. It is generally known that I like the classic, old-style head and that I am a stickler for as good a hackney-like action as I can find among the entries. I have put puppies up to Group wins, and I have passed over some big winners based on whether or not they met my criteria as defined by the breed standard. I have not been a breeder of Min Pins, but I judge every breed as if I am or intend to be a breeder. In other words, I keep the betterment of the breed in the forefront of my thinking when I am judging.
When I was asked to do this book I had a few questions. As I looked at the literature I saw that there are several books about the breed. What, then, was to be special about this book? I was told that this book was to be part of a new series that is intended for the general public as well as the dedicated fancier of a given breed. That is a broad spectrum. It s much easier to focus a publication on a specific segment of readership rather than trying to cover all tastes and interests. However, that was not to be.
When I put out the call for information and pictures and started to research the history and development of the breed, I was met with more than even I thought existed. Fanciers and the Miniature Pinscher Club of America have been extremely generous in sharing their pictures, which present a photographic history of the development of the breed. This enthusiasm stems from the fact that Min Pin fanciers are not fanciers-they are fanatics. They adore their breed and want only the best for their dogs. Because of their attitude, people have been very forthcoming with support for this project.
One thing of particular interest to me as I put the material into manuscript form has been the consistency of this breed. There has been almost a total lack of temporary fads to undermine the breed s basics. The standard has been set since 1980 and for 20 years breeders have protected the essence of breed character for the Min Pin. Yes, two different types have developed, but they are both recognizable as definitively Min Pin. If you were to see only the silhouette of a Min Pin standing on the top of a faraway hill, you would know it was a Min Pin. They are that distinctive. This kind of dedication says a lot about the people who have fostered and maintained the breed. Like their breed, Min Pin people are unique-and delightful.
For people who are just getting to know the breed, my intention has been to present as much as possible about the joys of owning a Min Pin. In addition, I have not been adverse to relating some of the needs of the breed that might or might not meet and blend with the desires of the prospective owner. Information is the best tool a dog owner can have, and this book presents information about the Min Pin in both breadth and depth.
For people who are already Min Pin owners, there is new information and there is joy in this book. There are stories shared by breeders and trainers that will delight any fancier. There are also sections in the book that will be useful even to experienced breeders regarding litter management, health and first aid. Reference material in the five appendices will be useful and of interest to the breed devotee.
After judging Miniature Pinschers for nearly three decades, rest assured that I have my own opinions and interpretations about their structure and character. That is reflected throughout this book along with my love and admiration of the breed. With that, I deliver to you, the newcomer or the experienced owner, the Miniature Pinscher.
