Description

"Ivan's training comes from the heart, for the dog. He has certainly enhanced my view of training and has taught me many valuable, yet simple techniques to achieve the most from my dogs and myself." --Mary A. Allen, World Championship Competitor, USA Apprentice Judge, USA New England Regional Director

"Ivan Balabanov is among the few top trainers in the country who truly understands dog behavior and drives. He is highly respected by the best Schutzhund competitors, trainers and coaches in the country." --Glenn Stephenson, United Schutzhund Clubs of America Judge, International competitor

Training methods for the top competitor. Advanced Schutzhund takes a problem-solving approach to Level III work that will help competitors bring their dogs to the highest level. Tracking, obedience and protection are dealt with individually, analyzing specific problems that crop up in each skill and offering step-by-step solutions. The approach uses operant conditioning techniques that steer clear of compulsion methods and build a dog's confidence, courage and problem-solving ability. You'll also find tips on how to compete at the National and World levels, including traveling with your dog.

Foreword
W hen I was approached by Ivan Balabanov in the spring of 1998 to supply photographs for a new Schutzhund book he was writing with Karen Duet, I was both honored and pleased. It has been a privilege to observe and photograph Ivan and his little Belgian Malinois bitch Nakita Des Deux Pottois SchH III at National events since 1992. It is rare to observe a competitor at a Schutzhund trial that does not yell commands to his dog, who handles a dog that is so obviously full of love and respect for her handler and performs her heart out. Ivan’s voice rarely rises past the volume of an intimate conversation with his dog; she works because she wants to please Ivan. If Ivan can share some of his training techniques with his readers, and those techniques are applied, we will surely be seeing happier, more spirited dogs on the competition field.
This book goes a bit further. For anyone considering the purchase of a dog for Schutzhund Sport, this book is a must. The chapters on selecting a new puppy or older dog will save the reader thousands of dollars and years of wasted time and heartbreak. What could be more discouraging than to pay thousands for a new dog or puppy, only to find as the dog matures that you don’t have a dog capable of doing the work? This happens every day to trainers and novices worldwide. The evaluation techniques taught here will help you to make the best choice for a dog that you will share your life with.
In the training sections of this book, advanced training methods and techniques will show you how to build a positive, happy, willing spirit in your new dog or puppy and how to present a competition dog that will be exciting to handle and exciting for the spectators and judges to watch. Each portion of an exercise is broken down into the responsibilities of the dog and the handler, and what the judge wants and needs to see. The photographs that accompany the text will illustrate clearly what the handler should do to follow Ivan and Karen’s directions. You will also find suggestions to clean up or fix a dog that has problems in any phase of the sport.
Finally, tips and techniques are offered to help the reader when all the hard work has paid off and you are going to compete with your well-trained dog. While most of this section of the book refers to National competitions, the advice offered here also applies to club trials and other events. In the excitement of a SchH Trial, common-sense errors occur and unexpected situations will always arise. Here, from experience, Ivan and Karen share their thoughts on trial preparation, ways to keep your dog focused and how to get the most from your dog once you hit the field with the world watching.
I’ve been in working dogs for 20 years and have spent thousands on seminars. I always felt I got my money’s worth if one new thing was learned. I guarantee that you will learn more than one thing from reading this book. Even with all of my time with working dogs, I have changed small parts of my relationship with my dogs based on what I have read here, and I now understand a bit more about how they think.
I wish you good reading and better training, See you at the SchH Trial.

Introduction
W hen I was asked to put together a book on advanced Schutzhund several years ago, the task did not at first appear to be a difficult one. Having been involved with Schutzhund for several years, and having been a member of Schutzhund USA since 1991, I was familiar enough with the sport to write on the subject. I also knew that I was by no means an expert on the subject of advanced Schutzhund. This book would require a coauthor who had competed at the top levels of the sport (Nationals and Worlds) and who had coached others at this level.
In the process of looking for such a person, I ran across many people who had the experience but who lacked the ability to organize their thoughts into a method. It seems that many people know what they do, but few understand why they do it the way they do.
I also had difficulty finding an individual whose methods I could agree with ethically. I have always felt that training based in psychology, that strives to work with the dog’s drives, desires, and abilities rather than against them, is the best and most natural form of training. There are times when force may be necessary, but in general I have found that positive reinforcement produces a much happier working dog. My challenge then became to find a coauthor who had the same basic belief and who had excelled in Schutzhund while using such techniques.
Ivan Balabanov was the man I was looking for. He has a well-defined style and an organized understanding of his method. Ivan’s experience is immense. Because he grew up in Bulgaria, then lived in Belgium for several years and trained with the Germans, Belgians, French and Dutch, he has the benefit of having learned both Eastern and Western European methods. After moving to the United States, he opened his own training business and behavioral counseling center, and he is currently the director of the San Francisco SPCA Academy for dog trainers.
Ivan’s style is a blend of all of the methods that he has learned over the years. His methods are based in operant conditioning but allow for many other psychological premises. I found Ivan to be a trainer who understands not only what methods he uses, but also why he uses them. He understands very well the results of all of his training methods on the spirit of the dogs he is working. Like a great artist, he picks his techniques judiciously and applies them carefully in order to get the most from his dogs. It is with great pleasure and satisfaction that I can bring you his methods in this book.
We would like you, the reader, to understand that we struggled with how to properly present this book to you. This book is written on the subject of advanced Schutzhund. We realize, however, that some readers will not be at the advanced level. In the first two chapters, we cover some basic ground in order to bring the less experienced reader up to speed on the subject. To those of you who are experts yourselv
