I would like to thank so many people for helping me with this book. First would be my mom, brother, and sister. They have all been very supportive in this endeavor by being some of the first to hear the story. I would also like to thank Matthew and Beau McMurray, Megan Folken, and Anne Adams for their willingness to read my rough drafts. They were all extremely helpful throughout the entire process.
Chapter 1 Messrs Perdu
“We’re going to be fine, Hux!”
Monty gripped my shoulder and displayed his bright smile. I really did believe that if he smiled at the right angle, he could signal a plane.
“This interview is nothing, we’re gonna kill it. Just watch,” he continued.
“We’ve never gone for anything this big before,” I said, “we aren’t qualified for something like this.”
“We’ll show them that we are qualified,” Monty reassured me, “don’t doubt yourself little brother.”
I adjusted my tie nervously as the cab pulled up to the building. Big gold lettering read Behaart, Kahl and Fett against the black stone arching above the front doors. An enormous corporation that controlled verifiable hotels and resorts around the world. They made most of their money from manufacturing the small glass panes for picture frames, clickers for ballpoint pens and the blue ink they use for lined paper.
Monty and I had an interview with Mr. Fett, one of the founders of the company. I had been dreading this meeting all day. We were hoping to be hired as consultants. At least Monty was hoping. I had severe doubts that they would even see us but I was still willing to try. We had just quit a much smaller company because of disagreements with the leadership. This was our chance to work with some of the most important people in the hotel business. Maybe even one day we could own a company like this. We couldn’t afford to screw this up.
I opened the gigantic glass door and Monty Followed behind me. I stared in awe at the enormity of the lobby. Completely encompassed by windows and black stone. Streaks of gold ran through the stone in straight lines from the vaulted ceiling, down to the floor. A single enormous banner hung behind the front desk. An emblem was centered on the banner consisting of three red spears crossing each other. They had been tied together by a thin strand of laurel and they were all distinct from each other. One was quite a bit wider than the others. The one next to that had a curved tip and the last looked like a very long fork. I stared in awe at the gigantic room.
Monty approached the front desk where a very attractive woman sat; she was typing rapidly on her computer.
“Hi, we are here to meet with Mr. Fett,” he announced.
The woman continued to stare at her computer screen. The sound coming from her keyboard was frantic, but she looked like she had never been more relaxed in her life. Monty tried to pull out his famous smile. Hoping that the shine would overpower the light streaming from the monitor. Surprisingly his teeth did not catch her eye.
Monty backed away from the desk, a baffled look plastered on his face.
“I can’t believe that didn’t work,” he whispered to me.
I looked around the enormously empty lobby. There was a small cluster of couches and chairs in one corner of the room.
“Should we just go sit down and wait?” I suggested.
Monty looked at me like he had no idea what I had just said. He did take quite a hit with the receptionist’s rejection. His eyes started watering like he was about to burst into tears. I grabbed his arm and took him to the couch and sat him down. We waited in the lobby for at least twenty minutes and never saw anyone enter or leave the building.
A quiet ding came from behind the reception desk, followed by what sounded like heavy machinery being turned on and off. The woman continued to sit behind her desk like nothing was happening. Monty and I on the other hand were trying to decide if the building was going to collapse on our heads or not.
“There they are!”
A robust man jumped out from behind the bannered wall. For how large he was, he could get around like a true speed walker. With the quickness of his step, the considerable weight on his abdomen would shift to a great degree with each forward movement. I couldn’t believe that he had any fat on him with the way he walked. It didn’t take him long to travel the considerable distance across the lobby to us.
“Fremont… Huxley!” He nodded as he shook our hands. “I’ve been looking forward to this.”
Monty’s attitude perked up as he regained his confidence from the interaction with the receptionist.
“It’s very good to meet you, sir!” Monty said energetically.
He flashed his smile, which was ignored by the man.
“Where are my manners, I am Jonathan Fett,” he said cheerfully.
Realization washed over my face as my memory shot back the very name of the company, Behaart, Kahl and Fett.
“We thought…we didn’t know…” I stumbled.
“Don’t sweat it kid, I meet with all the applicants,” he smiled “come on up to my office and we will have a little chat.”
Monty and I nodded and followed him across the lobby, each step making an echo in the empty space.
The elevator ride was long and silent. When I cleared my throat, it sounded like I was trying to start an old rusty car. Mr. Fett didn’t seem to mind though. He just retained a pleasant look on his face as he rolled up the sleeves of his white button-down shirt. He kind of reminded me of what I had always imagined Santa would look like without a beard. Finally, the elevator ride ended and we walked into another gigantic waiting room. The ceiling was almost as high as the lobby’s. An enormous window sat across from the elevator displaying the entire city from hundreds of feet in the air. I just stood there staring at out of the enormous single pain of glass.
“You can admire the view after we’ve discussed some things,” Mr. Fett said.
He led us into a small office. It was in huge contrast to the rest of the building. It had modest chairs and a small desk. I wondered how they were able to get as much into the office as they had. I marveled at the fact that Mr. Fett could fit through the door. He squeezed into his extra wide chair and waved at us to sit in the plastic folding chairs on the other side.
“Please take a seat, gentleman.” He smiled.
Monty sat down and immediately started speaking.
“Mr. Fett, I’m sure you have a lot of candidates pitching to you today. I just want to express our gratitude…”
“We aren’t considering anyone else,” Mr. Fett said calmly.
His words were followed by awkward silence.
“No one?” I finally asked, mostly out of surprise.
He shook his head and turned his attention back to Monty with a big smile.
“Go ahead, son.”
Whatever Monty was going to say was no longer on his mind.
“Um…”
“We feel that with our experience and expertise, we can help you grow and improve your company even further than where it is right now,” I said confidently.
“I agree,” Mr. Fett said flatly.
He maintained that pleasant smile on his chubby face.
“I am very familiar with the work you have done.”
We sat there in silence for a moment, staring at the man. He chuckled slightly, causing his entire body to jiggle.
“I’m afraid there was some… miscommunication on our part.” He smiled. “I didn’t invite you here for an interview, I’ve already decided to give you the job. I just wanted to get to know ya, size you up.”
We sat in silence for a moment. We hadn’t prepared for something like this.
“I’m not sure—” I started.
“I’m going to stop you right there, Mr. Perdu,” he interrupted, “again I’m
