About the Author
Cuco Francis was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1965. He grew up in Bushwick, Brooklyn. He dropped out of high school and held several kinds of jobs thereafter: messenger, mail clerk, telex operator, and computer operator. He went back to school to get his G.E.D. After obtaining his G.E.D, he enrolled in college, where he joined the school paper. Without knowing what he wanted to study, he left school and went back to work. He worked as a lifeguard, he managed a health club, and then he started working with computers again. He decided to go back to school and study computer programing. In November 2001, he graduated from DeVry College with a degree in computer programing. Due to the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, all the computer jobs were frozen. He was unable to find any work in the computer field. The only occupation that was available was teaching. He began teaching in Health Opportunity High School and went back to school. While going to school for his master’s degree, he worked in different parts of the school system. After teaching, he worked as a dean for several years and then became an attendance teacher. After working in the school system for thirteen years, he moved with his parents to Florida, where he and his family now live.

Chapter 1
Cayey is a small mountain town in central Puerto Rico, located on the central mountain range. Cayey is spread of fifteen wards and Cayey Pueblo. The population of Cayey is a little over twenty-eight thousand. The people are very cultured and healthy due to the natural diet. They only eat the food they grow and stay away from the food with preservatives added. They hardly get sick and when they do feel ill, most of them go to see Ming for natural healing remedies.
Ming Delgado is the daughter of Diego and Dora Delgado. Diego was the town physician and an herbalist. Dora was a teacher and studied botany. They taught Ming everything they knew about herbs and plants. Though Ming went to school and studied Medicine, she mainly used her plants to cure any sickness that the people of the town come to her with. Ming lived in Cayey all her life, but she wasn’t born there. Her parents were well-traveled people. They visited almost every part of the world. While they were visiting Asia, Dora was pregnant with Ming and went into labor. The Doctor, Lou Ming Cho, delivered Ming. Her parents were so taken with the name Ming that they named their daughter Ming. Ming’s parents passed away when she was in her twenties and away at college.
Ming inherited the family land and home, which is just outside of the town of Cayey. She has two acres of land and a one-story house. The house is an old-fashioned cottage with two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. The living room contains a large bookshelf which holds every book on botany, mathematics, English, Spanish, science, and geometry. Ming is now in her mid-30s. She is about 5’5", with curly hair, and a voluptuous figure. She was taught to always be kind and help anyone in need. She dresses in plain clothes and she doesn’t have any fancy attire because she mainly keeps to herself. The times she does go out, it’s mainly to the town grocery store to purchase a few items for her home.
The people of Cayey are friendly to one another and always socialize in the town church. Ming doesn’t spend much time socializing with the town’s people, other than to help those when they are feeling ill. She spends most of her time tending to her garden or reading.
Pablo Nieves, also known to the town’s people as Kiko, is the grocery store owner. Kiko is a man in his early 40s, muscular individual who stands about six feet tall with wavy hair and a mustache. He is quite taken with Ming and has known Ming since she was a teenager. He also knew Ming parents, who socialized with his parents when they were alive.
On her way into town, Ming takes some time to visit Kiko’s store.
“Hello, Kiko.”
“Hi, Ming, how are you today?”
“I’m fine,” Ming says, “I need to pick up some milk and juices. I would also like some cooking oil. Oh yes, can you cash my check, please?”
“Sure, and we just received a fresh batch of milk today.”
“That’s great. What kind of juice do you have in stock?”
“I have your favorite, pear juice!” he says with a big smile on his face, hoping that Ming would realize that he knows her favorite juice.
“That’s good. I will take three bottles.”
“Fine, is there anything else you would like to get today?”
“No, that’s about it. And thank you for cashing my check,” says Ming.
“Not a problem, you know you could always come to me for anything.”
“I appreciate that.”
“They’re having a get-together at the church this Saturday; will you be going?” asks Kiko.
“I don’t think so. I must tend to my garden. I would rather stay home reading, anyway.”
“You should try and socialize a little more.”
“I have things to take care of at home.”
“Okay, if you change your mind, it would be nice to see you there.”
“I’ll think about it. Thank you for everything. It was nice talking to you, Kiko. I’ll see you soon.”
Ming walks out of the store and proceeds back home, where she tends to her garden.
As Ming tends to her garden, she notices a strange plant growing. I didn’t plant this, she thinks to herself, I have never seen this plant before . She goes into the house and starts searching for the plant in all her botany books, but she doesn’t find any reference to this plant. She goes out to the garden and plucks two of the leaves from the plant and begins to chew them. As she is chewing on the leaves, the wind starts picking up and the clouds start forming overhead. Ming begins to feel dizzy, as she goes into the house. The room starts to spin and she passes out in the living room.
She wakes up the next morning feeling vibrant and having extra energy. It’s like she received a boost on life and clarity of thought. She goes back outside to the garden and the plant is no longer there. She checks the ground to see if someone might have plucked it from the ground, but the dirt is smooth and undisturbed. She can’t seem to understand it. What could have happened to the plant, she is thinking to herself. It was strange how the plant was growing and now suddenly, it’s gone. Ming goes inside and starts drawing what the plant looked like, so, maybe, she could research it later. She then goes back outside to tend to the rest of the garden.
Early that evening, just as the sun begins to go down. Three men, one light skin, one tan skin, and one dark skin, who were traveling the countryside and appear to be lost, stumble upon the town. They seem to be a little intoxicated. As everyone was inside watching their soap opera and getting ready for the evening, the three men passed by the town and come across Ming’s house, where Ming just finished tending to her garden. It starts to rain heavily when the three men see Ming.
“You guys need to get out of the rain before you become sick,” says Ming.
“We don’t live here, we are just passing through the town,” the light-skin man explained.
“Well, come inside at least, until the rain passes.”
“Thank you,” says the dark-skin man.
The three men go inside Ming’s house to wait for the rain to pass.
“Would you like something to drink?”
“No, thank you,” the three men said in unison.
“Fine, I’m going to heat something up in the kitchen, have a seat and relax. The rain should pass in a few minutes.”
While Ming is in the kitchen, the three men start whispering to one another.
“Nah, I don’t think we should do that. She was nice enough to let us stay here until the rain passes,” says the tan-skin man.
“Forget that, she is here alone. No one is going to know anything,” says the dark-skin man.
“Yeah,” the light-skin man agreed, “I don’t think she lives with anyone, anyway.”
Ming comes out from the kitchen, when the dark-skin man grabs her from behind and throws her to the ground. While the light-skin man holds her down and covers h
