The Lonely Man Conspiracy
It hadn’t been a busy week in the CID office at Kilburn, small house robberies, two or three car thefts, six assaults and a dozen drunk and disorderly cases.
Ben Clark and Alex Quirk were in the CID office when a call came through.
‘Safe blowing at a prominent building in Baker Street.’
Ben, Alex and Barrie Starnes from the CID squad travelled to investigate a rather simple routine robbery that turned out to be a nightmare. City Boys Security Company made the call, reporting that one of their contract buildings had been broken into, and a safe on the third floor of the building had been found blown open, the companies own investigating team were also on their way.
Charley Dawson stood six feet one, spotted face with brownish hair, in words of his employers a really nice chap. He had been employed as a Security Officer for about nine years, in those years nothing positive had happened. Charley felt really important that one of his buildings had been broken into, and some high flying CID officers were on their way.
The police were on site within ten minutes of the call; a further patrol car also arrived from the local police station.
Ben Clark asked Charley Dawson if he had seen anybody hanging around the office complex and was it correct the safes were on the third floor.
‘That’s correct, Sir, I have to check that floor twice a night but I didn’t notice anybody around.’
‘OK, let’s take a look at the office on the third floor, if you two officers pointing at them could remain here preventing anybody entering or leaving the building.’
‘Charley, is this the accounts department?’ looking at the safe on the third floor.
‘I have no idea, Sir.’
They looked at the next office which held two further safes that hadn’t been touched, the robbers certainly knew what they were looking for.
As they returned to the ground floor the investigating team from Boys Security Company had arrived. ‘I would appreciate if you all remain here until SOCO have finished their investigation,’ said Ben Clark.
SOCO arrived led by Ken Tucky who had known Ben Clark for some I8 years, ‘What have we got, Ben?’
‘Safe blown on the third floor, the perpetrators got in through a window on the staircase.’
‘I will take a look there first, Ben.’
‘We better telephone the key holder,’ said Ben, Alex sat with Charley taking his statement.
Alex, Ben and Barrie discussed the robbery, why would a security company only visit the third floor twice a night and not the rest of the building. Unless the third floor is the accounts department where large amounts of monies are kept in one particular safe, which means it must be an inside job.
Two safes not touched, so were the robbers frightened off or did they know exactly what they were looking for.
The senior investigating officer from Boys Security Company asked if he could interview Charley Dawson, Ben couldn’t see why not, but asked them all not to leave the building without speaking with him first.
Ben pointed out, that soon as possible they would look at which safe blowing teams were active at that present time.
‘Let’s go and see how Ken’s getting on.’ As they arrived, SOCO were just finishing, ‘Got anything, Ken?’
‘No, Ben, clean as a whistle, a professional team without doubt.’
Returning to the front desk, one of the uniform boys was speaking with a tall man, early forties with dark eyes and rather large ears wearing a brown suit.
Charley came forward. ‘Hallo, Mr Sainsbury, unfortunately there’s been a break-in and one of your safes have been blown.’
‘Christ no,’ Sainsbury turned to go up the stairs.
‘Hold on, Sir.’
‘I must go up-stairs now. You don’t understand it’s a life or death situation.’ Turning to one of the security company officials, ‘That’s your company finished here.’
Ben Clark stepped forward, ‘What’s going on here?’
Charley introduced Mr Sainsbury as the key holder.
‘Nice to meet you, Mr Sainsbury, let’s pop into this office and have a chat,’ suggested Ben Clark.
‘Who the hell are you telling me where I can go in my building, I insist on going immediately to the third floor.’
’Mr Sainsbury, we have an investigation taking place, we will be able to visit the third floor in five minutes, but first we require some details. One safe has been blown and two others not touched, are these safes part of your company’s accounts department.
There was no reply from Sainsbury, other than ‘O Christ, what am I going to do,’ turning white and shaking and making a dash for the stairs.
Ben signalled Barrie and a uniformed officer to follow him while he and Alex took the lift to try and cut Sainsbury off.
Reaching his office Sainsbury shouted out ‘O Christ, it’s gone.’
‘What’s gone, Mr Sainsbury, is this the accounts office?’ asked Barrie.
‘No, it’s not the accounts office, it’s my bloody office and it’s gone; my documents, maps and plans, and about three thousand pounds.’
‘Steady yourself, Mr Sainsbury, sit down for a minute, and take some deep breaths.’ Sainsbury pulled out a gun from inside his coat pocket. Barrie and the uniformed officer stepped back, ‘Sir, please hand over the gun.’
Ben Clark and Alex Quirk where making their way to the office when Sainsbury appeared in the corridor with the gun.
Alex shouted to Sainsbury to put the gun down, Sainsbury just turned firing the gun hitting both Barrie and the uniformed officer.
Alex leaped at Sainsbury, but Sainsbury was able to get another shot off grazing the side of Alex’s arm, which sent him flying, falling on top of Ben Clark both hitting the ground.
Sainsbury made for the staircase. The two other police officers and the security team made for the lift after hearing the shots telling Charley to remain at the front entrance.
SOCO also heard the shots and made their way down the back staircase to the third floor. Sainsbury arrived on the ground floor with Charley asking what was going on with the shooting.
Sainsbury just raised his gun shooting Charley, who slumped to the floor, Sainsbury jumped over Charley’s body running out into the street and away.
Ken Tucky was the first to arrive, ‘Christ, what the hell happened here.’ Ben was removing himself from under Alex’s body. Another officer was checking how bad Barrie Starnes and the uniformed officer were ’both were dead.
Ben checked Alex, ‘You ok mate.’
Flesh wound Ben.
The lift doors opened with two police officers accompanied by the security investigators stepping out.
‘We have two officers down,’ and Sainsbury’s made off down stairs.
‘Christ, Charley, get back down to the ground floor,’ yelled Ben.
Ken telephone Kilburn Police Station letting them know they had officer’s down.
‘Leave it to me, Ken, I’ll get the ball rolling,’ said Sergeant Weber.
Weber called Chief Inspector Bleasdale, along with the murder squad, letting them know they had officers down at Mallards Publishing House.’
Chief Inspector Bleasdale in turn called the Deputy Commissioner, ‘Absolute awful news, Bleasdale, I’m on my way with Superintendent Parker.’
The two Security Investigators ran down stairs to the front office, ‘Bloody hell, Charley’s dead, the bullet had entered his throat and exited out the back of his head.’
Jack Towner called his own company explaining that at least four people had been shot dead, police cars were on site in minutes. Murder Squad Officers arrived along with Chief Inspector Bleasdale.
‘Where are my men?’ Bleasdale asked.
‘Third floor, Sir.’
‘Who’s this poor fellow,’ asked Bleasdale.
‘The local security officer, Sir.’
‘The Deputy Commissioner is on his way,’ pointed out Bleasdale, checking his watch 22.35. The medics arrived and were directed to the third floor.
Chief Inspector Bleasdale was out of the lift and down the corridor ‘Whose down, Clark?’
‘Barrie Starnes and a uniformed officer, Sir, also the local security officer named Charley Dawson.’
‘Yes, Clark, I have already seen him.’
‘What about you, Quirk?’
‘I’m fine, Sir, flesh wound.’
Ken Tucky placed coats over the faces of the two officers on the floor. The lift door opened and the medics were down the corridor looking at Quirk’s arm.
Inspector Hales of the murder investigation team spoke with Sergeant Clark taking a brief statement before making his way back to the ground floor.
