Jace glanced north. A large number of seagulls circled over the bay to his left like a mobile, spinning around the vortex of some fishy feast. In the distance across the water in a park, dotted colors danced across the gray canvas of the waterfront. Parents and kids and kites. Out early, playing. He had a kite once––a box kite that his father had made in the garage before he died . . . bright red.
Jace stopped and felt his gut churn. Some forty yards away, where the passageway took a sharp right turn, a dark shapeless mass huddled on the cement. Jace heard a muffled cry as he walked tentatively toward the dark mound. Another cry––more of a wail.
"Hey!" Jace shouted. The shape moved abruptly at his call. The brim of a hat appeared. The dark mound was a square-jawed man in a raincoat and a white scarf. A raincoat? In this weather? Something else moved beneath. Kicking legs––the heels of shoes driving into the pavement.
Jace broke into a run. "What the hell are you doing?"
On his knees, the man in the coat made a jerk with his right arm and pulled what appeared to be a manila envelope from the body. Deja vu shuddered through Jace as he stared into the hollowness of the man's expressionless pale eyes. The man whirled, and with long blond hair flying, broke into a full run towards town, leaving the squirming body on the pavement.
Jace had to either help the victim or give chase to the attacker, who rounded a corner of one of the exhibition buildings and disappeared.
A pitiful moan convinced him to let the assailant go. He turned toward the man on the ground, who wore a rumpled blue three-piece suit, narrow gold-rimmed glasses and a trimmed gray beard. His eyes were wide with disbelief, his face contorted by panic.
Jace came to the end of the walkway. To his right a passageway led away from the shore towards downtown. The narrow walk was shaded from the morning sun.
