Description

Weaving stories has been primarily women’s domain since time immemorial. When women write, they speak from their hearts; emotion flows and carries the readers with the powerful currents. Women directly bear the brunt of family life fall outs, be it oppressive family and social rules and confinement or physical abuse when they don’t comply and submit. Even if they remain silent, submissive, their very existence makes them get intimidated. This volume, Writing Woman Anthology: Personal Essays and Short Stories, Volume 3, has exceptional stories from 13 African and Asian writers that brings together the diverse themes that humans struggle with in order to reconcile with emotions and conditions, which are depicted with realistic verve. Each story has a compelling narration of women’s pain and suffering.

Introduction Weaving stories has been primarily women’s domain since time immemorial. This volume of short stories is exceptional, as it brings together the diverse themes that humans struggle with in order to reconcile with emotions and conditions, which are depicted with realistic verve. Eachstory has a compelling narration of women’s pain and suffering. The stories are from the African continent, and one story is from India. African writers have a profound moral fibre. That is why the writings are revered and admired all over the world. They speak about women in a diverse manner, so intense and fascinatingly realistic. The young woman writers, enriched by rich oral literature, speak through textures and layers about contemporary lives. When women are battered sexually, spied upon by the irresponsible and self-centered husbands and boyfriends for stepping out of their homes independently. The anthology begins with a story, Endlessly Alone by Abigail George, and rightfully there is a second story, Diary of a Poet, by her. One wonders at the beauty of her language in a lyrical and moving exploration of the human heart. She is a visionary, a thinker and an intellectual.‘ROBERT KADENGU-The Devil’s Beloved’ by Lynette Tinomutenda Simango, is a tale of a modern self-

supporting bright woman’s endurance of her husband’s mental and physical exploitations, whom she married for love. Love, marriage and relationships, which define the very essence of womanhood, are deftly described as compromises for the victim woman.‘HOW I SUCCEEDED IN BRINGING EDUCATION TO WOMEN IN MY LARGER COMMUNITY’, by Benson Okenwa Ndaji, speaks about a woman who pestered her parents not to discriminate against her as she was a female. She studied at the university, worked as a lecturer and married of her choice; an example that would inspire the society against any discrimination against the girl child.‘Home’ by Letlhogonolo I Riba (South Africa), is a tender, feminine story, depicting freedom that comes with gripping demands as well. It’s the story of a bright young girl, learning to make her hostel room her home. ‘The Healer's Tonic’, by Vanessa Nakayange, keeps the African women fortune teller’s tribe so alive. It is a blend of one’s cultural roots in modern times, with its conflicts for a woman to be free and independent.‘Cracked skin and plain rice’, by Malebo Makhalangaka Mokoto, is a poignant tale of a wealthy woman with fortunes and family whose husband leaves for good. She faces the trauma of her children used to luxury in life facing abject poverty, step by step.‘Odun’dabe’, by Rukayat N. Banjo, speaks about the right of passage ritual that takes place in Nigeria, initiating young girls, ojo’dabe- the day of circumcision. The surreal depiction of cheering villagers, solemn looking women who firmly held the young girl is deeply moving. An accidental deep cut in the vagina of Arika, the four -year -old girl, leads to heavy bleeding leading to her death. The tradition was stopped for the female daughters of Ibale, subjected to female genital mutilation.
