“The Passionate-Voyage”

It’s Monday morning, and I’m lying on my bed half asleep half awake, enjoying the sound of my alarm clock. Yes, as strange as it sounds I really enjoy its rhythm. I set my virtual alarm on the sound of the Lark, the sound of the soft spring wind, and the falling river. So, I could easily say I enjoy sleeping on my alarm clock. Although today it’s a big day for me, but I believe 5 more minutes of rest will not be the end of the world. In the middle of this relaxing moment, my mom came and started yelling:
- Mom :
Nicole, Nicole, Nicole, you- lazy princess it’s time to wake up honey, or else you will miss your flight to Beirut.
True today It’s a big day for me, and I will see my grandma Nicole, which I have not seen in 10 years. Of course, I see her only on the virtual Screen.
My grandma Nicole, whom I carry her name, lives in Beirut, she is a psychiatrist, and it is her birthday, she will be 90 years old next month. Mom, told me that I resemble her a lot, not only in her looks but also in my personality. I’m her youngest granddaughter, and I love her a lot.
Recently, I’m a writer that been always astonished by love stories, but I believe that in order to write a love story the writer needs to live this story, so that his honest feelings can be transmitted to reader in an honest way.
I jumped out of bed, took a shower, got dressed up and went to the kitchen to have breakfast and say goodbye to my parents.
After the good-bye kisses, mom told me:” I will drive you alone to the airport”. I wondered why mom, wants to drive me alone to the airport? Is there something she wants me to know about Grandma Nicole? I hope my grand ma is not sick, because I love her so much, and I can’t tolerate not having her by my side.
I hugged my dad, and told him how much I loved him, and whispered in his ear, Is grandma sick?
- Dad:
“No honey, she is not, but there are things about your grand-ma, that no-one knows, and she decided you will be the keeper of her secret”.
I asked myself what is this secret? But I hope this secret won’t be a sad one. I entered the car, sat next to mom, and asked her:” Mom do you know my grand-ma’s secret?”
- Mom:
“Honey, I really don’t know, but all I know that your grand-ma survived a tragic civil-war in Beirut. And until now, many inspectors, and even psychiatrists tried to know what happened to her but she has not spoken. This secret kept the tears in her heart and eyes for years.
Grand-ma Nicole, I can’t wait to see you. My beautiful grandma what secret kept all those years? And what war did you survived?
And why you kept it a secret? Why did this secret keep a tear in your eyes? Then I said:” Mom, I love you, and I want to know the truth”.
- Mom:
We all want to honey, we all do. We tried a lot to bring grand-ma here to Paris, but she won’t leave Beirut, and especially her neighbourhood (Beirut-Hills).
After a while, we arrived at the airport, I said farewell to my mom, took the plane, and started the trip that changed my whole life. A trip that taught me to fall in love, a trip that made me comprehend the tears of love, the pain and joy of love.

It really makes me sad that my only living grand-parent, my beautiful grand-ma lives alone, I started to think that maybe I will move to live with her in Beirut, because I’m really worried about her. How does she live in Beirut all alone? What if she got sick, who will take her to the hospital? I decided to stop these whole worrisome thoughts and focus on the beautiful things I want to share with her, so I closed my eyes, and slept the whole flight back to Beirut.
After a couple of hours, I heard the stewardess saying: “Beirut airport welcomes you; we hope you enjoyed your flight”. That sound brought a tear to my eyes; finally, I could see my grandma. I left the plane, and ran and called a taxi.
I finally found one, I said: Can you please take me to Beirut hills?
- Taxi Driver :
Off course my daughter I can, but Beirut-hills is a very big neighbourhood, can you specify your destination?
- I replied :
“Well, my mom used to tell me that, it was called long time ago Saseen - Square.
- Taxi-Driver :
Oh, sweet daughter, you reminded me of the old days, come, come I will take you there and I’ll help you with your bags.
Thank you, a lot, - I said.
I entered the Taxi, which was a very old Taxi, a red sport Ferrari, with leather seats, and a CD player. I thought aloud, is there still a CD player existing nowadays? Also, the taxi driver had an I-Pad, what??? An I-Pad, that’s really odd, because nowadays these things are only found in the museum.
If you don’t mind me asking Sir, how come you still have this Car, and his I-Pad, these are ancient history now? - I said
- Taxi Driver:
Oh daughter, you made me laugh, it’s been a long time since I laughed like that. You know daughter, this car was considered a prestige car in its days, you won’t believe it but it was. And for the I-pad schools were fighting to have I-pads for students rather than copy-books. You might laugh at this but it was true at that time. Daughter may I have your name?
My name is Nicole, Sir”- I said.
- Taxi-Driver :
“Nicole, that’s an old- fashioned name, however this name is really popular in Beirut Hills”.
Really what made it so popular? – I replied.
- Taxi-Driver:
Nicole my daughter, some-things are better unsaid and forgotten, rather than remembering the woe it brings.
Tell me Sir, I’m originally from Beirut, but I have been here only once – I replied.

- Taxi-Driver :
All I will tell you daughter, that the 4 days war in Beirut Hills, or as it was previously known “Ashrafieh”, changed the life of lots of people.
What happened in the war? And this place was called Ashrafieh? – I said.
- Taxi-Driver :
Oh! look daughter we are almost there, is that the place?
Yes- Sir it is, and this is my grandma’s home- I said.
- Taxi-Driver :
Ok daughter Nicole, let me park and help you with your bags.
This taxi driver was a true gentleman, he helped with all my bags and was really hospitable with me.
Here Sir, please accept my 100$ bill for your drive- I insisted.
- Taxi-Driver:
Nicole, I can’t accept or take any money from you, because you remind me a lot of my grand-daughter, all I can tell you, enjoy your visit and never forget your home Beirut.
Thank you, sir but I didn’t get your name- I replied.

- Taxi-Driver :
You can call me “Abo-Muhamad”.
Thank you, Abo-Muhamad, Farewell – I said.
What a drive, I really enjoyed this conversation with this man, but many questions were spinning in my head. Why is my name so popular in here? What caused the so called 4 days war? All of these questions kept turning in my head. I’m a writer, it’s my job to write stories and get answers, but this case held so much mystery in it. The way I see Beirut-Hills or “Achrafieh” as Abo-Muhamad said, as a neighbourhood full of green hills and skyscrapers, except for my grand-ma’s home, which is considered a classical heritage home.
I told myself that’s enough I had thought and guessed a lot, I want to see my grand-ma Doctor Nicole, I missed her face, her simple smile, and the simplicity of her character. I entered the building took the stairs, and there I was ready, excited, and worried at the same time to ring the doorbell. Oh, finally grandma time, and I took my frozen hand and rang the doorbell.
I rang the door, and there she was my beautiful grand-ma Nicole, I couldn’t help it but to throw myself in her arms.
Grandma, grandma, I missed you so much, age made you grow but didn’t take all your beauty. I missed your warm hugs, caring touch, and the way you used to brush my hair- I said passionately.
- Grand-ma Nicole:
Sweetie, you have grown a lot to be a true princess; grand-ma misses you a lot. Tell me how many hearts did you break with your beauty?
Grandma, you always had this sweet tongue, I didn’t break any hearts yet, but my heart is broken because I missed you a lot- I replied.
- Grand-ma Nicole :
Sweetie, please come in, and let me help you empty your bags. If you like, you can take a shower and get some sleep, I’m sure you are so tired from the trip.
No, I slept all night, also I slept in the plane, all I want is to
