This magnificent novel, In the Depth of Depression written by Junior Mokoena, is a dagger drawn against ignorance. It is a moving novel crafted by the eloquent young author, who in this year (2022),is in Grade 7 at Eagle's Nest School in Polokwane, Limpopo. Junior Mokoena, a very creative someone, highlights the plight of a Primary school boy who is discriminated at school and at home for being gay. This novel mirrors the naivety, attitudes and oppressive values held by those who deny the gays their proper place in the sun. Mokoena 's narration is an art that dazzles every reader of this special novel. He tells his story in words so eloquently that they can become a song. His fiction story is so interesting that it reminds one of the words of Shafinaaz Hassim, "Fiction is the perfect vehicle for exploring the nitty-gritty narratives that swirl around us, especially in an effort to make sense of the spaces within which we might find ourselves trapped, disillusioned, powerless". It is unbelievable that this is his first published novel. With young and exciting authors like Junior Mokoena, African literature has a bright future. This is a great novel which will surely receive much acclaim and admiration. Ben Okri, the Nigerian giant of literature was right when he said, "Books are like mirrors. Don't just read the words. Go into the mirror. That is where the real secrets are. Inside. Behind. That is where the gods dream, where our realities are born." This magnificent novel reflects that, when the mighty waves of sentences flood through the pages and the whine of the wind gives way before the fearful rush of billows of poetry, one cannot help but feel sublimity.
