Father and Mother I Love You

The Kindest and Happiest Person – My Mama
My mama has imparted many important life values to us, though she left the world when we were still quite young – I was 15-year-old then. She has done so many kind deeds and funny things that had imprinted deeply on my heart. Some of the most memorable ones were:
■ Shouted “Ah Hui” at Our Void Deck
I remembered I was in secondary school and was on my way home. While I was at our void deck nearing the lift, I heard someone shouted my name super loudly, “Ah Hui” (that was what my mama used to call me). I turned around and saw my mama waving frantically at me.
Then I asked her, “Mama, why did you call me so loudly?”
She said, “Because I am so happy to see you!”
She was so cute right. We should express our feelings freely and loudly so that our loved ones know how we are feeling! I love my mama so much.
“Life is to express yourself, not to impress ot hers.”
■ Reflections at N ight
My mama used to tell me, every night before we sleep, we need to reflect on what we have done for the day and think of how we can do it better next time.
This is so true, let’s all be a better version of us every day. My mama was so wise right.
“We improved and we keep impro ving.”
■ The Old Grandmother at Our Void Deck
There was this old grandmother, who stayed in the same block as us, always sitting alone at our void deck in the day. I think she spent her time there because there was no one in her house during the daytime.
My mama would always brew a flask of hot milo for her. Sometimes after our market trip, we would also sit down with the grandmother to accompany her and I recalled us helping her with her “part-time” job, which was to insert the string for those small transparent plastic bags used mostly for small food items. Thinking back, my mama was really kind.
“Kindness is more important than wisdom, and the recognition of this is the beginning of wi sdom.”
■ Queuing at the Te mple
We were at the temple queuing to see the “跳党” uncle for my tummy ache. I remembered there was this old aunty queuing behind us, my mama gladly told the aunty that she can take our queue number while we take hers. This was so that the aunty need not wait so long. This must have made the aunty’s day.
“A little kindness goes a long way.”
Despite her relatively short tenure in this human world, she has lived life very fully and influenced so many people! Especially, she has groomed a group of incredibly good humans – and they are:
• Tan Jit Teck (my elder brother, Korkor),
• Heng Kim Pei (my elder sister, Dajie),
• Heng Kim Hui (Myself),
• Heng Kim Fen (my younger sister, Fen),
• Gary Ng (my younger brother, Gege),
• Tan Yiru (my younger brother, Didi), and
• Chong Jialing (my younger sister, Meimei).
Yes, I have every type of sibling! Elder brother and sister, younger brother and sister.
