Description
She was supposed to say no. She rehearsed it on the courthouse steps, ticked the charges off on her fingers, and got all the way to the end of the list before she heard herself agreeing.
*You don't understand. He's innocent.*
Isabella Conti stops mid-stride, November wind cutting through her trench coat, and turns.
Alessandra stands three steps below with her shoulders hunched inside a set of scrubs and dark circles carved beneath her eyes like she has not slept in a week.
*Sandra. I can't.*
*You haven't even read the file.*
*I read the indictment. Two counts conspiracy to distribute, one count second-degree murder, one count felony possession of a firearm.* She ticks them off on her fingers. *Your brother was caught with a dead body, a kilo of uncut heroin, and a gun registered to somebody's cousin. That's not a case.*
It is not a case. It is a coffin with a docket number on it, and she takes it anyway, and everything after that is the consequence.
She has never lost a case she believed in and has never taken one she did not. This is the first exception in fourteen years, and she takes it because a woman in scrubs said please on a set of courthouse steps, which is a reason that will not survive a single cross-examination.
What follows: the lie she has built her life on, a door she swore she would never open, the price of a second chance, the gift of a shared enemy, the taste of trust, a cage she built herself out of good intentions, a truth that breaks two people, and an enemy who has been standing in plain sight the entire time.
*He had laughed, kissed her forehead, and said, "You bought a bookstore."*
*"I leased a bookstore."*
He has the file, the alibi and the name of the man who actually did it. Now he has to convince a lawyer who has spent her entire career being right about guilty men that the one time she was wrong is the one that matters.
