Prologue

August 20, 2010
“Cameron, where are you going?” she asked as he quietly made his way out the room. He stopped at the sound of her voice, making him hesitate for a quick second. Her eyes were already finding an answer in his sweet tortured face, an answer he wouldn’t admit to, for her own good.
“I’m going for a ride,” he answered after some thought.
She knew the only thing she could do was smile and let him go, she still holds on to hope.
His eyes that once looked cold and emotionless to people’s feelings, now show more of a gentle expression, even though there’s still regret hiding deep behind the softer light that has taken over them. The pain he still holds inside. The regret that has been tormenting him throughout the years. It’s time to free him from pain.
Today, at the Park of Hopes, where beautiful white oak trees with orange, red, and yellow leaves decorate the once green grass in the fall, there’s a calm lake in the middle of the park, where ducks spend all summer waiting for people to show up and feed them all day. And like every year, there’s a little reunion. Family, friends, and even the ones that once were enemies sit on top of the hill, where the water reflects the fiery sunsets, leaving behind a sense of loneliness as the light slowly vanishes where the sun meets the high mountains of Montgomery Village. Everyone comes here to celebrate life.
My life.
For almost three years, I’ve been walking the world, gaining the strength I needed to come and visit this place. The place that brings most of the painful and sweet memories of my whole life. A life I only got to live for sixteen years. Every year I tried to gain all the strength possible and the courage, courage to walk in front of all the people that kept me in their hearts for so long. I could never do it. Today, for some reason, I feel that I will do it. Finally, I’ve gained the necessary strength to finally set them free, set him free, and finally free myself from this trapped space between all of us.
Finally, I can see my mother smile happily. My father shows a gentler expression. I see how my sister has grown from a misunderstood teenager, to be a person that cares for others. My friends, they haven’t changed much; I would never want them to. That would make me really sad. And him, to see those eyes that still intimidate me, but make me melt as his guard fades. Those eyes that, for once, made me question God why he let this happen to me. Why me?
But with the years, I got my answer. Now I have a question for him.
“Hey, Cameron, were you happy? Back then did I fulfill my purpose in life?” I asked, but I was sure he couldn’t hear my voice. Not anymore.
Chapter 1

February 9, 2008
“Hey, Sam!” the two of them greeted as I got closer to the building.
“Hi,” I answered back, trying my best to keep my calm, especially in front of him. Cameron Derwood, my weakness. The hottest guy I ever knew. My heart fluttered just to see him leaning against the railing, arms crossed as he glanced past me.
Seeing Cameron first thing in the morning was the strength that pushed me through the not-so-graceful mornings. School was never fun for me; I hated it, not because I was a lazy girl that only wanted to be home and do nothing. Home for me was just the same as anywhere else—boring and chaotic. The reason I hated school was because fitting in was such a drag. Especially if my school was the so-prestigious Horizon High Private School, where everyone acted so high and mighty and all that mattered was to stand out.
Not me, I didn’t care about any of it, but my friends did, my parents did, and just to give my sister something to entertain herself with, of course, I ended up here as well. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, until for different reasons I ended up being part of the most popular group not just in school but in the whole town—The Elite group, a group composed by the most popular, good-looking, and selfish jerks anyone would meet. Miles, Angel, Yael, and him. Cameron, the dreamy playboy every girl wants to be played by. Everyone in this school was born to be the center of attention. Some were naturals at it and some just tried too hard. I was just a girl, with a simple mind, just living day by day and of course, crushing on the worst jerk I found, Cameron Derwood. Not like everyone else though, my case was different. Unlike every girl, I was satisfied with being only friends with Cameron. Liking and drooling over him was my best kept secret.
I was never going to admit that for him. I was willing to wake up and put on my so-recognized uniform. To be next to Cameron Derwood, it was worth it. Not that he was even going to consider me a romantic option, ever, but at least I was close to him. As a friend, and that was enough for me.
“Collins! Look at you. You’re making progress!” Miles, one of the jerks I called my friend, commented as soon as he caught sight of me stumbling to get to the main door. Cameron glanced my way like he always did, full of himself and over-confident. He smirked and turned to Angel as he whispered something to him. A simple gesture that made my heart flinch.
Being close to Cameron also included people like Miles, a bully that fed on people’s misery and my anger. Not caring or considering anyone’s feelings, he would go from a simple prank to being the worst insensitive jerk in the world. Though for some miracle of God, I managed to ignore his stupid comments and, sometimes, that required a lot of effort. Cameron silently gave me all the energy I needed to handle his clique. The way my heart throbbed every time we made eye contact, it was special and pleasant. That’s all I needed to get me through the day and to handle Miles and his sidekick Angel.
“Hi,” I said to Angel and Cameron, not even bothering to acknowledge Miles in front of them. Angel high-fived me with a mischievous grin, if I wasn’t so caught up with Cameron, I would have melted for Angel. He was an instigator that loved everything that could cause drama. He would never start anything, but he would cheer on anyone that started something. Cameron gazed at me but did not say a word which was a normal greet coming from him. My heart jolted gently as he slightly nodded and again looked past me. I tried my best to keep my sm
