Description

Everyone has a story to tell! Some are exciting, some are mundane. Some are new and others are old. If the story is told in a way that readers can relate to, it becomes difficult to put down. This book entails a number of stories and articles written to entertain and, in many cases, to educate the reader about the world we live in and how to achieve success in it. Some are true, some are not. But each is constructed in such a way that it will force the reader to consider a different way of looking at life and the world. As a friend of mine said, "This really is an enthralling collection of short stories with a variety of topics including a fantastical tale of a 19th-century robber and a little boy who runs away from home and eventually returns after nearly freezing to death. This collection covers a wide range of emotion. Readers will find themselves turning page after page without a stop of this charming collection."

Introduction
The following book entails a number of articles and stories written to entertain and, in many cases, to educate the reader about the world we live in and how to achieve success in it. Some have been published; some have not. Some are true; some are not. Each is constructed in such a way that they will force the reader to consider a different way of looking at life and the world around them and to better plan for what lies ahead.
A wise man once said, “Think before you leap!” Learn as much as you can about what you are really leaping into. But remember, God gave us each a brain. Use it before you jump into something you know nothing about. But on the other hand, once you have looked at the possibilities, don’t be afraid to take that leap! You’ll never know success if you don’t take that jump! Besides, we learn most from our mistakes. And those who have achieved success in life have made plenty of mistakes. The trick is—learn something from each mistake and use this knowledge for the future.
Once upon a time, there was a man crippled by a disease called polio. Polio was an affliction that affected hundreds of thousands of people in the early part of the 20 th century. It was a disease that was devastating to families. It crippled children and many adults. It was considered incurable. If a person lived through it, they were usually crippled for life. But there was a man who refused to accept his life sentence. This man had made many mistakes in life but he refused to accept defeat. He believed he could achieve something more, and he was a man who learned from those mistakes and used this knowledge both for himself and his country. The man’s name was Franklyn Roosevelt. His body suffered through this disease throughout his whole life. Yet, he went on to become president of the United States, serving longer than any other president in US history, even though being crippled by this polio his whole life.
Chapter 1 A Time for Tears
Let’s start by looking at a child’s first encounter with the world outside his home and it is a real learning experience for him. What he does with this experience sets the stage for what is yet to come.
Pockets full of rocks, shoes filled with sand, a comic book protruding from the back pocket, hat cocked sideways on his head, the world an endless playground. Each of these is a characteristic of that strange creature—a boy.
Ten-year-old Danny Darcey was small for his age, but what he lacked in size, he made up for in enthusiasm. He thoroughly loved life and all the things he saw around him.
“Mom, what makes the birds fly south in the winter? How do we know there is a God? Where do babies come from? Why does it get cold in the winter and hot in the summer?” These were some of the questions he constantly challenged his parents with. He couldn’t seem to learn enough, quick enough.
In a crowd, no one except his parents would ever pick little Danny out. He was a typical boy of his age; sandy hair, blue eyes, freckles covering his small, pug nose and a constant dirt smudge on his chin. When he laughed, his whole face laughed and when he cried, the whole world seemed as though it could come to an end. He loved worms and frogs and dirt.
His biggest joy in life was to continually harass his two younger brothers and sister. He spent much of his time thinking up ways to make their lives miserable, much to the chagrin of his parents.
The Darcey’s traditional farm house was set magnificently on the side of a hill in New York State’s southern tier area. Winter came early to this small community of farm folk. By November, they were already entrenched in six inches of nature’s white blanket. They had become accustomed to this and reacted accordingly each year.
Danny liked the snow and found a whole new world around him each winter. He discovered that his sister despised being pelted with snowballs, so he made it a point to clobber her at least once a day as she walked out of the house. For his brothers, he found that a little snow jammed neatly down the back of their winter coats did wonders. He loved to watch their expressions as they ran screaming to tell their mother.
Danny found other joys in winter also. He loved to hike through the snow, just breathing the cold bitter air. It was this last enjoyment that led to the tragedy.
It was Saturday, November 9, 2009, when Danny experienced a situation which almost ended his young innocent life. On this particular day, he had been teasing his sister constantly until his mother’s patience finally snapped. She snatched her yardstick from behind the stove and brought it down heavily on this posterior.
“Danny, I’ve taken all of your nonsense I can stand for one day. Go to your room and stay there until I say you can come out!”
The tears flowed freely down Danny’s cheeks. He sat down heavily upon his bed thinking to himself, They don’t love me anymore. I’m the only one who ever gets yelled at. It’s always my fault. If anything’s wrong, I’m to blame. They don’t really want me around.
He went to the big paper bag he had filled with comic books. He dumped them in the corner, opened his drawer and tearfully began filling the bag with clothes. He put in his trousers with the big hole in the knee, the socks with the mended toe, and the sweater with the patch on the elbow. He added his collection of brightly colored stones he got from a nearby field, which made up his only real earthly treasures. These stones were very valuable to him! He listened intently at the door to hear just where his mother was. He heard his dad come in and mutter something about a rumor he’d heard, that a huge black bear had wandered into the area. He listened patiently until he heard his parents move into the living room. As their footsteps disappeared, he cautiously crept out of this room and into the kitchen. He reached into the cookie jar, jammed a handful of molasses cookies into his already overflowing bag. He also stuck in several apples, for good measure.
He quietly put on his coat, hat and overshoes.
They don’t want me around; so I’ll run away. Maybe then they’ll miss me a little bit. I don’t know why they don’t love me at least a little. With these thoughts, the tears started again.
The love of a little boy is so intense; the tragedy of it all is that adults love far too little.
Winter in the southern tier is a time of beauty, a time when nature glistens in the day and crackles at night. The trees sparkle as Jack Frost passes his magic wand over them. Bushes, shrubs and evergreens stand out brilliantly against their white backdrop. There is another side to winter, however, a side which is
