Dedication
The following short stories I hope will draw you, the reader, into times long past, some good some possibly best forgot on. It may make one recall one’s own past and how things have changed over the years. We all become beset with memories because they are yours to treasure, to rekindle for good or bad, fortunately we are usually able to forget those memories that are heat forgotten and remember the good things. The beautiful thing about memories you rarely lose them, sometimes it is irritating when you have given up it will come back to you again right out of the blue.
To my readers, I hope the pleasure that it gives me writing these stories will pass to you.

The Doctor
The Doctor
Somewhere far away he could hear a bell ringing. In his subconscious state he tried to shut out the sound, but the bell was persistent, and slowly dragged him out of the deep comfortable sleep. He listened there, it went again, accompanied by a massive thump on the door knocker that seemed to reverberate right through the house. Slowly he got out of bed, the chill of the room making him shiver, after the warmth of the bed. Quickly groping for his dressing gown, he made his way across the room to the window, the linoleum striking cold to his bare feet.
As he pushed the window upwards, the fog surged in around him, the street only some twenty feet below him was not visible. Another clang on the bell, followed by a thump on the door, caused him to call down to the unseen caller.
On his enquiry a voice muffled by the fog came back to him, “Could you come at once, Doctor, the baby is on its way?” Uttering a silent curse on the head of the impending unfortunate infant, the doctor withdrew his head, and pulled down the window with a sharp bang. Dressing quickly, he soon joined the visitor in the street outside. Now he was close to him and he could see he was a boy of about eleven, poorly dressed, his thin coat no protection against the cold and the dampness of the fog. With almost no communication between them, the boy set off. Being well past 3:00 a.m. the street lights had long been extinguished, the fog and the blackness of the night combining to making the walk an unpleasant one. Two or three times the doctor stumbled over an unseen or uneven paving stone, lamp standards were narrowly avoided, as they appeared out of the gloom with every intention of colliding with him. Not for the first time, had the doctor wondered what had possessed him to take up medicine; maybe the hope of a nice cosy practice in a pleasant suburb. Instead he struggled on in the poverty of London’s East End, the successful practice now almost a forgotten dream. As a young man he could take these night calls in his stride, he even rather thrived on them. But now well past sixty, they took their toll and he feared the call that disturbed his rest and sent him God knows where, especially on a night such as this.
