Who is Sylvia Earle?
When Sylvia Earle was 12 years old, her family moved to a house in Florida, USA, by the Gulf of Mexico. Earle had no idea then how important the Gulf would become to her. She quickly learned.
By the age of 13, Earle wore swimming goggles to explore the Gulf’s warm waters. At aged 16, she wore a diving helmet and reached the deep bottom of a river near the Gulf. A year later, she learned toscuba dive. This allowed her to discover the Gulf’s undersea secrets and, eventually, the secrets of the world’s oceans.
Earle’s dives were always about adventure, but they grew to be much more. Earle was a curious student of the seas – a natural scientist.
Sylvia Earle has spent her lifetime exploring the hidden beauty, wonder and secrets of the marine world.
