There have been extraordinary changes in medicine since the start of the 20th Century. Diseases that were killers in 1900, such as polio, have been almost wiped out. Hundreds of new drugs have been developed. This book shows how today's extraordinary surgical techniques, such as heart transplants, would have been unthinkable for a doctor a hundred years ago. And, unlike 1900, people in many countries today can see a doctor or other healthcare worker when they need to, often for free.

This diagram shows the main factors for change that led to improved medicine and health in the 20th century.
A transformation in medicine
The 20th century was a time of extraordinary change, and no more so than in the world of medicine. For example, diseases that were killers in 1900, such as polio, were almost wiped out. Hundreds of new drugs were developed. Today’s extraordinary surgical techniques, such as heart transplants, would have been unthinkable for a doctor 100 years ago. In 1900, very few people could have afforded to see that doctor. Today, in many countries people can see a doctor or other healthcare worker when they need to, often for free.
