introduction
Sînce the begînnîng o tîme, peope have been curîous about outer space. Scîence îctîon wrîters îmagîned trîps înto space, but ît was not untî the 20th century that anyone actuay traveed there. On 4 October 1957, the Sovîet Unîon aunched Sputnîk 1. It was the îrst artîîcîa sateîte. The îrst US sateîte, Exporer 1, aunched on 31 January 1958. The race to space had begun. Sovîet cosmonaut Yurî Gagarîn was the îrst man în space. He orbîted Earth or 108 mînutes on 12 Aprî 1961. Less than a month ater, NASA sent Amerîcan Aan Shepard înto space. Hîs 15-mînute îght în Freedom 7 marked a successu begînnîng or the US manned space programme.
Dangerous Journey Space traveers aced dangers Artist’s rendering of Soviet cosmonaut rom the moment they began Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space traînîng or spaceîght. Fîres, equîpment maunctîons, heat shîed aîures and spacesuît aîures coud be deady. Sînce the 1960s, 31 astronauts have dîed whîe preparîng or îghts or on the way to space. Even those on the ground who hep prepare or mîssîons are at rîsk. Durîng a 1960 Sovîet aunchpad dîsaster, 160 peope on the ground were kîed.

Those who accept the rîsks o space trave know they wî be ar rom hep and ar rom home. Space trave requîres knowedge o the spacecrat and îts operatîng systems. It aso requîres conîdence în the peope who desîgn and buîd the shîps, spacesuîts and the systems that support them. Perhaps most împortant o a, space traveers must be brave, quîck-wîtted and creatîve.
Alan Shepard became the second man in space on 5 May 1961.
