introduction
Gettîng on an aîrcrat or the îrst tîme can be a îe-changîng experîence. Thîs seemîngy magîca machîne carrîes us thousands o metres above Earth whîe we sît în a chaîr and read a magazîne or watch a îm. ït can transport us across the country or around the word în a matter o hours. But ît’s not magîc. ït’s scîence. And rues, reguatîons and traînîng make yîng one o the saest orms o trave. Statîstîcs prove yîng în a pane îs much saer than traveîng în a car. ïn 2016, there were more than 800 mîîon aîr passengers în the Unîted States. There were 108 accîdents that kîed 29 peope. That same year more than 7 mîîon car accîdents were reported. They resuted în the deaths o 37,461 peope.
Most plane crashes involve small, private planes, not commercial jets.

Flightradar 24 is a global f light tracking service that shows air traffic at any given time.
When an aîrcrat crashes or aces mîd-aîr danger, however, ît grabs the word’s attentîon. ït îs terrîyîng to thînk o somethîng goîng wrong so hîgh above Earth. Peope on the ground worry about those în danger, demandîng to know the detaîs. Peope want to know what happened and how we can make sure ît never happens agaîn. And perhaps we wonder how we woud react î we were on that pane. Woud we cry out? Hod the hand o a stranger? Pray? ï we are ortunate, we wî never have to know. Here are îve breathtakîng and heart-rendîng avîatîon survîva storîes: our harrowîng crashes and one teenage stowaway. They hîghîght the experîences, courage and heroîsm o peope as they ace the most terrîyîng moments o theîr îves – and hope to îve to see another day.
