ANSWERS TO TESTS (1-21)
Hello, and welcome to your guide, Life in the UK Test: Practice Questions and Answers. If you are reading this, then the chances are you’ve decided to become a British citizen. This is a brave and exciting choice which will have fantastic benefits for you. However, it’s also time consuming and expensive. The application process is long and arduous.
Luckily, this guide is here to help!
The second book in our British Citizen Series , this guide will provide you with 21 full mock tests. Every single one of our tests is laid out exactly like the real thing, meaning that this book is the PERFECT resource to help you practise for your assessment!
Our advice is to use this book in conjunction with the first book in our series, Life in the UK Test: Study Guide . The materials from the aforementioned book have been taken from the Home Office Publication, Life in the United Kingdom: a guide for new residents. This means that everything we’ve tested you on in this guide and our previous guide; is based on what you can be expected to encounter during the real thing.
The material from this book will test you on the knowledge needed for the third edition of the test, which was launched in 2013.
At the time of writing (November 2016) the price to take the Life in the UK Test is a whopping £50. Every time you re-take, you’ll need to pay out beforehand. Thus you won’t just be spending your time, but your money too! Hopefully this should give you even more incentive to pass the first time!
The aim of this book is to help you SAVE money. By using this guide, and our companion books, you can make sure that you ace your first attempt at the test. With our help, and the right commitment, you truly can become a certified British citizen.
How to Use This Guide
To pass the Life in the UK Test, you’ll need to revise extremely hard. There are an awful lot of topics that you’ll need to revise, from history to politics. To help make the learning process as easy as possible, we’ve replicated the real tests as closely as possible. Each test in this book contains a wide mixture of questions, with all of the tests focusing on topics such as British history, modern day Britain and politics.
At the back of the book, you’ll find all of the answers to the questions, so you can check up on how well you are doing. You can take the tests in any order that you like, but we recommend spending a maximum of 45 minutes on each test; to reflect the real thing.
Before we begin, let’s go over what you need to do in order to become a resident of the UK.
Applying to Become a Resident of the UK
In order to become a citizen of the United Kingdom, you’ll need the following:
• You must be able to speak and read in English;
• You must have a good understanding of living in the UK, and what this requires;
• You must be able to pass the Life in the UK Test.
In order to become a British citizen, you will need to provide good evidence that you have speaking and listening skills in English at B1 level of the European Framework of Reference. There are a wide variety of tests that you can take and these tests vary in whether they test speaking and listening skills only, or combine this with reading and writing tests.
In this book, we’ll provide you with essential knowledge that will help you prepare for taking the Life in the UK Test.
The Life in the UK Test
The Life in the UK Test is a computer-based assessment. Passing the test is one of the requirements for anyone who is seeking Indefinite Leave to Remain in the United Kingdom, or seeking naturalisation as a British citizen. You won’t need to take the test if you are under the age of 18, or over the age of 65. Once you have passed, you won’t need to take the test again.
The test will assess you on your knowledge of Britain’s past and present. While you won’t need to remember dates of birth or death, you will need to have a strong historical understanding of Britain in order to pass.
The Life in the UK Test has 24 multiple-choice questions, and lasts for 45 minutes. The questions are chosen at random, and in order to pass, you need to achieve a mark of at least 75%. So that means, out of 24 questions, you will need to get at least 18 correct. The test is taken in English, although special arrangements can be made for anyone who would prefer to take the test in Welsh or in Scottish Gaelic.
In order to take the Life in the UK Test, you’ll need to book your test online at https://www.gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test . The test can only be taken at a government registered test centre. There are 60 Life in the UK Test centres across the UK. If you take the test at any other establishment, without governmental permission, the results will be not be accepted.
When you book your test, you will need:
• An email address. This will be used to contact you/confirm your test date;
• A debit or credit card. To take payment for the test;
• An accepted form of ID. To ensure that you are a legitimate candidate. Accepted forms of ID include: a passport (which can be out of date), a UK driving licence, an EU identity card, an immigration status document with a UK residence permit, or a biometric residence permit.
When booking your test, it is essential that the name given on your test booking matches exactly with the ID that you use to book the test. You must include your full name, with any middle names, or you will be rejected.
After you’ve booked your test, you may need to wait for a short while before taking it. You are able to cancel your test without charge for up to 7 days after booking, but after those 7 days, you will not receive a refund in the event of cancellation.
Once you arrive at the test centre, you’ll need to be registered, so make sure you get there as early as possible. You’ll be required to sign a document confirming your attendance, and will be given the opportunity to undergo some practice questions prior to taking the actual test. These questions won’t count towards your actual mark, and are just there to help you become familiar with the testing software.
If you pass the test, then you will be provided with a Pass Notification Letter. You’ll need to sign this before you leave the centre, before taking it with you and sending it off as part of your citizenship application. It is essential that you keep this safe, as you won’t be able to get a replacement.
In the event that you fail, you’ll be eligible to book and pay for the test again, but you’ll need to wait for at least 7 days before doing so.
Why Do I Need to Take the Test?
The Life in the UK Test provides demonstrable proof that you have sufficient knowledge of life and language in the United Kingdom. If you are applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (also known as ‘Settlement’) or British citizenship, then you’ll need to take this.
In order to meet the requirements, you’ll need to:
• Pass the Life in the UK Test;
• Obtain a speaking and listening qualification in English at B1 CEFR or higher, or its equivalent. If you have a degree-level qualification or higher, in English, then you won’t need to take a language test. Likewise, you won’t need to take a language test if you are from a country where English is the majority spoken language.
Which Areas Should I Study?
As mentioned, you should try to learn as much as you possibly can from the chapters of our previous book. All of the material is testable and could appear in your exam. However, you will not need to remember dates of birth or death. Instead, you will be expected to know when key events happened, or when particular individuals lived. For example, you won’t be asked ‘What year was Shakespeare born in?’ but you might be asked, ‘In 1564, which famous playwright was born?’
In regards to learning dates, there are also a few exceptions. You will need to know the dates for important festivals and events. For example, if you are asked what date Christmas falls on, you will be expected to answer with December 25th. Likewise, with movable
