A world of words
Our lives are full of words. You probably say about 6,000 to 8,000 words each day. You hear and read thousands more. From posters to schoolbooks, text messages to song lyrics – words are everywhere. We use them to communicate, learn, and have fun.
What is a word? A word is something made up of a letter or group of letters that has a meaning, or definition. It’s impossible to count the exact number of words we have in the English language – wellknown dictionaries such as Webster’s list around half a million words. Every word has a history, a meaning, and a structure.
What is word structure? Words are made of parts, and the parts make up the structure. Letters of the alphabet are the smallest parts of words, and are usually the first element we use to start to construct and read written words. Many words are made of a word with parts added to the beginning or end, such asgreener(greener). The word without the addition (green) is called the root word. The structure of a word is called its morphology.
It is important to know about the parts of words – their morphology – because it helps us to understand and read words, to pronounce them, and to use and spell them correctly.
EAT YOUR WORDS Oops!
Understanding the structure of words can help us to spell and avoid embarrassing mistakes, like this one.
QUICK TIP Glossary This book has a Glossary on pages 52–53. If you see a word you don’t understand, check the Glossary. If the word isn’t there, try a good dictionary (see page 42 for advice on understanding dictionary entries).
