FOREWORD
This book is both a reference grammar and a textbook. It deals with the description of the major grammatical constructions. Its aim is also to describe the grammar of English in relation to its main functions in communication, and to provide enough detailed description to be of practical use in the study of texts in English with a particular focus on Applied Foreign Languages.
In grammar wecan’tappreciate the use of an operator that is out of its context. In general, grammar rules are beyond thenatives’consciousness. Speak a language is different from talking about the language. That is why you can be a native of one language and ignore its functioning. A child speaks his mother tongue properly, though he could never write out its grammar. But the grammarian is not the only one who knows the rules of the language ; they are well known, albeit unconsciously, also to the child. The grammarian is merely the one who knows how and why the child knows the language.Umberto Eco, Reflections on The Name of the Rose' (1985)
The objective of this grammar book is to help students out in their ignorance by giving them access to the simplest explanations oftoday’s grammar. It will help them to
7
revise important grammar lessons and develop an assured command of the English language. Each topic provides a clear explanation of a particular aspect of English grammar with exercises in the form of texts, sentences, crosswords, etc. It’sa modern and clear approach based mostly on ESP texts.
