Description

Technology and air superiority equals success in modern warfare. But even during the War in Afghanistan, satellite recon and smart bombs cannot replace soldiers on the ground. OVERVIEW: AFGHANISTAN

On 11 September 2001, the terrorist group Al-Qaeda attacked the United States, hijacking four commercial airliners and flying three of them into buildings along the east coast. President George W. Bush and the US military responded quickly. On 7 October 2001, they began Operation Enduring Freedom, attempting to shut down Al-Qaeda hideouts in Afghanistan and capture their leader, Osama bin Laden. In recent years, the military campaign has evolved into a counter-insurgency operation — tactics to keep the Afghan government and citizens in favour of US policy.
