Kilauea Volcano Erupts By OWEN GOUGH PUBLISHED: 19:08, Wed, May 16, 2018 | UPDATED: 19:47, Wed, May 16, 2018 HAWAIIAN volcano Mount Kilauea has erupted, spewing lava hundreds of feet into the air and forcing thousands of locals to evacuate the area as hundreds of homes face the possibility of being destroyed by the lava flow. Kilauea erupted, spewing lava and molten rock all  over the southern region of Puna in Hawaii. A short series of powerful earthquakes destroyed the crater floor, damaging the internal structure of the mountain. More than 10,000 local Hawaiian’s have evacuated the region, particularly in the Leilani Estates, where the lava has taken over more than half the area. During the early episodes of the current eruption, a’a lava flows of up to 11m thick, surged through the Royal Gardens subdivision at rates as great as 33m/min.Five volcanoes make up Big Island: Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualalai, Mauna Loa, and Kilauea. Hawaii’s main volcanoes are “shield” volcanoes, which produce lava flows that form gently sloping, shield-like mountains. A good example is Maunaloa which deceptively covers half of Hawaii Island. Of the five volcanoes, three are currently active: Mauna Loa, Loihi, and Kilauea. Kilauea (4,169 metres) is the most active of the five, remaining active and almost continuously erupting for more than thirty-five years. The last significant eruption occurred in 1983, but the damage has been much more significant this time around. More than 250 earthquakes struck the volcano region in less than 24 hours, compromising the strength of the crater floor. A powerful 6.9 magnitude quake hit on Friday, destroying the basin and spewing forth a flow of lava down the mountain. Kilauea normally channels its lava flow to a giant lava lake near the magma chamber, but the earthquakes broke the internal structure, forcing the pressure up and out from the Earth’s surface. A series of eleven fissures were ripped open over the weekend, spitting long lava flows and toxic gas into the nearby Leilani Estates.
