Description

An informative, entertaining and slightly frightening pamphlet, in which Special Agent Christian White takes readers on a chilling tour of the US government's declassified surveillance documents. The script for COINTELshow has been performed by writer/activist L.M. Bogad in theatres, galleries, labour halls and community centres for the past 12 years. The pamphlet also includes a preface by Guillermo Gimez-Pe*a, a companion essay by Bogad about the history of domestic surveillance/harassment, and a 'how to' for would-be performers of the script.

FOREWORD
I ave been collecting a surveillance file of my own on Larry Bogad and is suspicious “performance work” since I first saw im present tis piece at Galería de la Raza in San Francisco’s Mission several years ago. A packed ouse of Cicano poets and performance artists simply couldn’t understand wy Gómez-Peña would invite an intelligence agent to te most venerable Latino art space in te city. After a deliberately awkward self-introduction in gringoñol, Bogad, as Special Agent Cristian Wite, proceeded to arm us wit knowledge about te state’s rutless tecniques to confuse, delude, and destroy. He tiptoed back and fort over te border between paranoid security-fantasy and radical istory, between revealing and concealing, between ironic persona and sincere self. ¿Queweird, no? here is umor of te darkest kind in tese pages, but sorrow and fear as well. Bogad toys wit official documents and ideologies wit bizarre neo–Borsct Belt sensibility. But ten e dives under te censor’s black marks to mourn te erasure of istory, te enforced social amnesia, te lost lives and struggles to be found and reclaimed in tat redacted darkness. his piece is astute and troubling. It is definitely a new type of political performance tat embodies te enemy wit ambiguity as op-posed to rendering im a cartoon or a monster. I invite you to read one of te most original performance art pieces I’ve ever come across. Read it out loud to your peers! Perform it! Before it is censored and we face total elimination of our rigts to free speec and assembly. Guillermo Gómez-Peña
