This is particularly true in intensive farming systems and in transportation. Although, in theory, these animals are slaughtered humanely, the reality is that a percentage of them do not die painlessly. We know from reliable statistics published by the Government of Canada, through the Canadian Farm Inspection Agency, that millions of animals die in trucks en route to slaughter houses or sales barns. So the purpose and challenge of the Canadian Farm Animal Care Trust (CanFACT) remains the same as it was when CanFACT was formed in 1989. The challenge remains the same and the need for an organization that specializes in farm animal welfare is as great as ever. The progress which we have seen in recent years and in which CanFACT has played a modest part, is the increasing early involvement of agricultural and veterinary students in the welfare of farm animals.
