Disappearing languages undergo the common process of syntactic and stylistic reduction, and according to the findings of a certain number of specialists in the field of linguistic obsolescence the relative construction is particularly affected. We examine the validity of this hypothesis in the case of the Arabic dialect spoken in Kormakiti, referring to the modes of expression of two distinct groups of speakers: those with a good level and those with a lesser degree of competence. We have been able to establish through our study that, although the dialect is disappearing, the relative construction remains perfectly stable. This could be explained by the structural similarity between the Arabic dialect and the Cyprus variant of Greek, as well as by the fact that the less competent speakers tend to substitute the relative construction for the attributive adjective.
