’The Cognitive View in Cognitive Science: An Investigation in the Context of Wittgenstein’s Later Philosophy’ A Thesis Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Ludwig-Maximilians-University MunichDr. Wolfram B. Schmitt MBAJesus CollegeUniversity of Oxford March 2006Primary Examiner: Prof. Dr. Wilhelm VossenkuhlSecondary Examiner: PD Dr. Richard KingExamination Date: 24/07/2006DedicationTo my Mum and Dad, and to my brother Klaus with love and gratitude. iiAcknowledgementsI decided to write this thesis about 10 years ago, just after I had left school. By this time my fledgling interests in human nature had matured and developed into a serious interest in the human mind and philosophy. I could not possibly have come this far, however, had it not been for a great deal of support provided by others. First and foremost, I would like to thank my mum and dad, who continuously nurtured my curiosity and love of books, and who taught me the importance of a ‘humane perspective’. Above all, I would like to thank them for their limitless love and support, which protected me through so many good times and some darker ones too. On the academic side, I would first of all like to thank Prof. Dr.
