Session In I: Power Sector Reforms in India – Evolution and Solutions

Over last decade power sectors in India has undergone changes and major transformations are

expected to take place in the next decade. So the power engineers/educators of our country need to educate
the upcoming graduates and conventional field engineers to meet the futuristic power sector reforms. There

are many issues related to theft power, reliable power and economic power, but the recent scenario need
close attention in the area of economic power generation, transmission till the customer end. Development

of new algorithms and models suitable to power sector reform need to be discussed and developed.

Dr. Narayana Prasad Padhy, BOYSCAST Fellow received his Degree (Electrical Engineering), Masters
Degree (Power Systems Engineering) with Distinction and Ph.D., Degree (Power Systems Engineering) in

the year 1990, 1993 and 1997 respectively in India. He has published 47 international journal papers. He
has delivered 31 Invited Guest Lectures and published a text book. Currently he is working as Associate

Professor, IIIT Roorkee

Session II: Evolutionary Multi-objective Optimization

Many real-world optimization problems involve multiple conflicting objectives and variables are of

continuous or discrete in nature. The presence of multiple objectives gives rise to a set of trade-off optimal
solutions, known as Pareto-optimal solutions. Most classical methods convert multiple objectives in to a

single objective either by aggregating them by weights or by converting all but one objective into suitable
constraints. Recently, increasing interest has been shown in the use of evolutionary optimization

algorithms for finding multiple Pareto optimal solutions simultaneously in a single simulation run MOEA
constitutes one of the most active fields of research for finding Pareto optimal solutions simultaneous. This

tutorial, contrast the differences in ideas between classical and evolutionary multi-objective methodologies
and provide adequate fundamentals needed to understand and use both methodologies in practice.

Dr. S.BASKAR, BOYSCAST Fellow obtained his B.E.(1991), M.E.,(1993) and Ph.D.(2001). He has done

his post-doctoral research (2004) in the area of Evolutionary algorithms and applications at Nanyang
Technological University, Singapore, under BOYSCAST fellowship supported by DST, Govt. of India.

His fields of interest include development of Evolutionary algorithms and its applications. He has published
22 journal papers in the field of evolutionary algorithms. He is short-listed for the Commonwealth

academic staff fellowship scheme for undertaking six months training at UK by UGC, Govt. of India. He
is currently holding the position of Professor in the Department of EEE, TCE.

Session III: Static Voltage Stability Assessment using Neuro Fuzzy
Determination of the steady state voltage stability is essential in power system
operation and planning. Deregulated policies, environment legislation, construction cost
of new transmission lines, continuous growth in demand are main factors forcing the
utilities to operate their system closer to maximum power transfer capability limits.
Consequently, the risk of voltage instability or voltage collapse increases. It is evident
from various voltage collapse incidents occurred around the world. Thus, the
determination of voltage stability limit at various operating condition is essential to
operate the system with sufficient safety margin.

Mr. C.K.Babulal obtained his B.E. (EEE) and M.E. (Power system Engg.) degrees from
in the year 1991 and 1993 respectively. He has submitted his Ph.D. thesis. His areas of
interest include application of fuzzy logic, neural networks to power system voltage
stability assessment. He has published 10 papers in the national, international conferences
and journals in the area of power system. Currently he is working as a senior grade
lecturer in the Department of EEE, TCE.
