Juni 2009This work is dedicated to minds that areopen to rational scientific reasoning andare not pre-occupied with dogmas.AbstractWhile ordinary differential equations (ODEs) form the conceptual framework for modellingmany cellular processes, specific situations demand stochastic models to capture theinfluence of noise. Motivated by that, we seek a stochastic framework based on Markovprocesses to represent intracellular processes. We review the formal relationships betweendifferent stochastic approaches referred to in the systems biology literature. The most common formulation of stochastic models for biochemical networks is thechemicalmasterequation(CME).Whilestochasticsimulationsareapracticalwaytorealisethe CME, analytical approximations offer more insight into the influence of randomness.
