MaruhnAbstractSelf-consistent mean-field models based on phenomenologically adjusted effective nucleon-nucleon interactions have approved to provide a substantive description of nuclear groundstate properties all over the table of isotopes. The enormous success of modern Skyrme-type interactions has led to a regime were accounting for correlations beyond the mean-fieldbecomes inevitable. The low-energy spectra of spin-saturated gg-nuclei gives evidence for a low-energy collectivequadrupole mode. Due to the softness in the quadrupole degree of freedom the major partof the correlation energy (beyond mean-field and pairing correlations) is stemming fromquadrupoleshapefluctuations.Thecharacteristiclow-energyspectrumwasfirstexplainedfordoubly-magic nuclei by A. Bohr’s model of the nucleus as a quantized harmonic quadrupoleoscillator.
