Fixed base stations at the roadside allow a wireless com-munication of vehicle and passengers with the environment via public radio andcellular phone networks. A newer approach is to enable also a direct communi-cation between vehicles. Vehicles equipped with a self-organizing wireless ad hoccommunication system form a Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) for exchang-ingdataonthelocallyseenroadandtrafficstatus.Thisinformationallowsadriverassistance system to be aware of the local situation in a wide area (> 10km).
