Description
In the uplands of East Morocco water supply for men and animals has always been precarious. Only in the Gaada of Debdou region and the step in the northwest conditions are better due to an number of springs. In the south, however, the drinking water supply is limited to a few wells which mainly provide water of inferior quality and with a high content of sulphate. In the central parts the nomads can only obtain water from Rdirs or Dayas which dry up in summer.
In order to prevent this water deficiency, the nomads and later on also the Ministry of Agriculture drilled cistern- like wells (Oglats) in the alluvions. During torrential rains these wells filled up. Water from Oglats, however, is often contaminated by bacteria ; therefore the quantitative risk during dry years is accompanied by a general qualitative deficiency. Only in the A in Beni Mathar region do we find a more favourable situation. Here artesian wells have so far guaranteed a sufficient water supply.
The dating of all existing wells and springs in the uplands, however, indicates a slow depletion of the water reserves. The natural drying-up of the Aih Beni Mathar region, which is even accelerated by overpumping, has very serious consequences, especially for the nomads. They depend on a dense water network with a distance of only a few kilomters between sources.
For this reason I have concluded with a presentation of the elements of a water supply system. That system could contribute to the independency of the uplands in East Morocco from traditional water supply facilites as well as from seasonal fluctuations in precipitation.
