Description
The case of the Fulani peoples of northern Cameroon is used to examine the general question of the articulation of local social and cultural structures with the modern state's encompassing structures. A key issue is Fulani ethnicity, which is analyzed through its two historically constituted variants : the highly incorporative sedentary Fulani's and the distinctive pastoral Fulani's. The varying modalities of « Fulbeization », as ethnic identities are transformed into the culturally dominant Fulani model, are related to the concept of pulaaku (the « Fulani way of life ») and the role of Islam. In contrast to Bayart and others, the author argues that an adequate understanding of global in relation to local structures within the Cameroon political formation requires paying close attention to the culturally specific logics which the concept of ethnicity seeks to capture.
