Description
Although european medicine, in its neohippocratic and post-neohippocratic forms, was imported by british and french military and diplomatie missions, persian physicians integrated it at a theorical level, and not by way of political means, as India, Egypt or other North-African countries. Politics were very present in the penetration of european medicine, but the politics in question had been carefully chosen by the Qajar dynastie authorities. They wished on the one hand to maintain the institutional and political status of traditional medicine, represented at court by the cheif physician (hakim-bâshi), faced with the newly created position of the personal physician to the Shah (tabib-e makhsus), and to fill this latter post by european physicians whose countries did not have colonial or expansionist aims in the region. This policy explains the domination from the middle of the XIXth century onwards, of french doctors as versus british ones in Qajar Iran. Otherwise, physicians tended to be often austrian, german or deutsh.
