Description
Mostly remembered for his brutal slaying by the police on the aftermath of the great Kantô earthquake of September 1925, Hirasawa Keishichi (1889-1923) was a proéminent labour activist as well as a promising writer. Trained as a qualified smith, he had already a long experience of factory life when he became involved in the labour movement, first with the Yûaikai, later as the leader of an autonomous anarcho-syndicalist union. But he was also a dynamic and interesting playwright deeply concerned with the establishment of workers'drama groups. Thus, after a short outline of his life, this article focuses on his theatrical work, mostly as the founder and leader of the Rôdô gekidan, a workers'group based at the Nankatsu industrial zone of Tokyo, which productions were enthusiastically received by its working class audience. Hounded by the police, the Rôdô gekidan had only a very short span of activities, but it left a profound impression on the leftwing intellectuals and artists who attended its performances, and it is still vividly remembered as a pioneer of the proletarian theatre movement, and as one of the few instances of a theatre written and acted by and for the working class.
