Description
Summary : About the « cognitive revolution » in experimental psychology.
First of all the author sets out the epistemological framework of his subject matter. Drawing reference from the works of Kuhn, Lakatos and Feyerabend, he maintains that experimental psychology no longer complies with the norms of empiricism. He illustrates this, citing the case of Skinner.
Then, tackling the general history of experimental psychology up to the fifties, the author attempts to bring some consistent features to light. In his account the shift of paradigms follows three conditions : the degeneration or crisis of the dominant paradigm ; the putting forward of a new proposition based on previous developments carried out outside the framework of the dominant paradigm; the attraction of this proposition for both reasons scientific and extrascientific.
Finally, based on this, the author reaches his main objective : the development of cognitive psychology from 1955 up to the present time. After some preliminary remarks dealing, above all with the ambiguity of expressions such as « cognitivism » or « cognitive psychology » he reconstructs the historical logic leading from the dominance of a behaviorist « paradigm » to that of a « cognitive » paradigm. He mentions the crisis of behaviorism which arose in the fifties. He reflects on the existence of forerunners in cognitive psychology. He emphasizes the crucial impact of the development — apart from psychology — of cognitive sciences, as well as the role played by the « mediators ». He divides the development of cognitive psychology into three stages : the underground revolution (from 1956), the emergence (1967) and the organization (1977). He discusses the role of expe- riences and he questions tke significance of cognitive psychology with regard to scientific « progress ». Finally he finishes with several remarks about the relationships in the field of therapy (from behaviorist therapies to cognitive therapies).
Key words : empiricism, paradigm, history of experimental psychology, behaviorism, cognitive psychology.
