Description
Behind the representations of infanticide or mabiki ema.
This paper discusses the problem of infanticide {mabiki) from a series of representations held in temples (ema), as well as written and oral documents. It examines the three main protagonists of an act that was common even after the Meiji Restoration, and lasted until the beginning of the Showa era : the mother, the midwife and the child that the family did not want to keep. It looks into the conditions of infanticide and the beliefs that surrounded it. It shows the two sides of infanticide : although many people considered it a necessary evil, meant to ensure the survival of the rest of the household, public and religious authorities insisted on the monstruosity of the mother (and of the midwife or the mother-in-law when they acted out). The responsability of the father was also suggested.
