Summary
We have studied how the original order of words in a text can be reconstructed from an arrangement of these words in a different order. We have investigated hocv far the grouping of these same words by twos or threes can modify the difficulty of reconstruction.
The successful reconstruction of the text is the criterion of the comprehension of significant relations between the words and thus of the comprehension of the ideas in the original text.
We have studied how the linguistic tools, grammatical rules and verbal habits, intervene in the reconstruction of the text. The texts were presented as telegrams : a form with Utile redundancy. The subjects had to reconstruct the telegrams by manipulating words or groups of words written on small cards.
The more the text was broken up, the more difficult ii was. The understanding of the significant relations between words was always superior to the accuracy of the relations established between them in the reconstruction of telegrams fan expanded rewording of the telegrams sup-ported this). We have established the role of the constraint imposed by the customary verbal associations and that of the uncertainty created by equivalence of the role which several words can play in relation to one other word when the syntax does not completely determine the choice.
