Dekan Prof. Dr. Lutz KippFor my beloved parents.vAbstractThepresentthesisdealswiththeelectronicstructure,workfunctionandsingle-atom contact conductance of Pb thin films, investigated with a low-temperaturescanning tunneling microscope.The electronic structure of Pb(111) thin films on Ag(111) surfaces is inves-tigated using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). Quantum size effects, inparticular, quantum well states (QWSs), play a crucial role in the electronic andphysicalpropertiesofthesefilms[1,2]. Quantitativeanalysisofthespectrayieldsthe QWS energies as a function of film thickness, the Pb bulk-band dispersion inΓ-Ldirection, scatteringphaseshiftsatthePb/Aginterface andvacuumbarrier¯as well as the lifetime broadening at Γ.Theworkfunctionφisanimportantpropertyofsurfaces,whichinfluencescat-alytic reactivity and charge injection at interfaces.
