ChinaTag der mu¨ndlichen Pru¨fung: 05.05.2006Probability Density Function Modeling ofTurbulent Non–reactive and Reactive Spray FlowsGutachter: Prof. Dr. Eva GutheilProf. Dr. Ju¨rgen WolfrumAbstractTurbulent spray flows are frequently encountered in practical combustion systems.The features of turbulent spray flows such as droplet size distribution and mixing pro-cess of fuel and air are very important for combustion efficiency, combustion stability,and pollutant emission. Turbulent spray flow is a very complex process which includesturbulence, heat and mass transfer, and phase change. For reactive cases, chemicalreactions need to be considered. All processes are strongly coupled. Many aspects insuch processes are unsolved.In the present thesis, turbulent spray flows are investigated using probability den-sity function (PDF) methods. Two methodologies are used: the presumed and thetransported PDF method. The presumed PDF methods adopt empirical distributions.The parameters of the distributions are computed from the first several moments whichare determined by solving the transport equations of these moments. The transportedPDF methods directly solve the transport equation of the single/joint PDF.
