Drug jars with « istoriato » decoration, from the Duchy of Urbino>/i>.
An account is given of a group of drug jars painted with « istoriato » subjects and motifs such as cursorily executed winged heads and bands composed of sinuous lines embellished with curlicues. Two of the jars bear the date 1563, and two display an unidentified coat of arms. The coat of arms occurs also on an albarello which is a companion piece to an albarello inscribed in Castello durante 1541 ; consequently it is inferred that the jars with « istoriato » decoration were made at one of the potteries in the duchy of Urbino (Castel Durante or Urbino). There is some evidence that the jars of 1563 were the work of Andrea da Negroponte, potter at Castel Durante, whose signature occurs on a stylistically related dish in the Museo Statale d'Arte Medioevale e Moderna in Arezzo.
