Description
In the course of more than a century and a half of study, the specialists on Ibn Khaldûn (Tunis, 732/1332 - Cairo, 808/ 1406), both eastern and western, have taken remarkably little interest in the religious aspect of his thought. This oversight is all the more surprising because it appears that his first mature work, the Shifâ' al-sâ'il li-tahdhîb al-masâ'il, is entirely devoted to the religious. Very much in the character of his period, the spirituality of Ibn Khaldûn displays itself in this work as mystico-legalist in inspiration.
In the Introduction the questions of the authenticity and date of composition of the Shifâ' are dealt with. This is followed by the translation — the first into a European language — of two important extracts: the prologue, relating to the problem of the modalities of the spiritual direction of aspiring mystics, and chapter I, in which is studied the essence and the evolution of soufism (éd. M. al-Tanjî, Istanbul, 1958, pp. 3-18). (Transl, by J. Dudley).
